Centre is the most prominent
space establishment at
its Oberpfaffenhofen site and
is responsible for the monitoring
of satellites as well as
the European Research Lab
Columbus on board of the
International Space Station
ISS. A high-performance
computer centre is assigned
to the overall control, storage
and communication duties.
Modification
at running operation
It is a matter of course that
this future-oriented high
technology requires a reliable
building automation system.
Therefore, the DLR site
decided to modernize the
ICA and BMS technology of
the entire complex of buildings.
An uninterrupted modification
at running operation
as well as highly available
automation stations for the
cold air supply of the computer
centre had to be guaranteed.
Neuberger Gebäudeautomation
received the order to
execute the ICA/BMS tech-

nology for the cooling, heating,
ventilation and electric
section. Thus the automation
stations PMC2, Touch
PCs with the ProGrafNT
monitoring system as a manmaschine-interface
could be
realized. The communication
is realized via BACnet/IP.
The used BACnet Building
Controller (B-BC) comply
with the BACnet protocol
standard ANSI/ASHRAE
135-2004, DIN EN ISO

Man-Machine-Interface
MMI
The set of controllers are
equipped with Touch PCs
(Man-Machine-Interfaces).
The connection with all
PMC2 automation stations is
realized via BACnet/IP. The
ProGrafNT monitoring system
enables intuitive operation
and monitoring of the
plants directly on site.
As the computer centres have
to be reliably supplied with
cooling energy, the ICA/BMS
technology requirements are
very high. To comply with
these requirements the plants
are equipped with redundant
CPUs. A Watchdog function
monitors the active CPU and
starts the Standby CPU in
case of any failure.
Seamless integration
On fieldbus level the following
bus systems have been realized:
Cooling machine, conditioning
cabinets (for control,
server and office
rooms) and electric counter
by means of LON
Fire dampers via AS-i Bus
Emergency power generator
and UPS units via
Modbus
The connection of the overall
system to the superordinate
management level of another
product has been realized
via BACnet/IP. To realize the
project at running operation
was a great challenge – but
it was managed due to the
good cooperation of all parties
concerned.
