62. Berlinale / The Berlin Film Festival
Der Februar ist in Berlin ein kalter Wintermonat. Kalt und
dunkel und windig. Aber nicht überall! Eine Stadt, die
ein Filmfestival wie die “Berlinale” hat, muss sich um
das Wetter keine Sorgen machen.
Vom 9. bis 19. Februar werden in verschiedenen Kinos
der Stadt über 400 neue Filme gezeigt. Berlin ist
besonders stolz darauf, dass es das wohl größte Publikumsfestival
der Welt hat – ein Muss für die Filmfans
der großen, weiten Welt.
Das Festival ist aufgeteilt in Sektionen. Im Wettbewerb
kämpfen die großen internationalen Produktionen um
Goldene und Silberne Bären. In den Sektionen Forum
und Panaroma gibt es ein breiteres Spektrum mit Experimentellem
und Dokumentarischem. Und dann gibt es
noch die Kurzfilme, Filme für Kinder und Jugendliche,
eine Retrospektive und kulinarisches Kino, bei dem es
auch vor der Leinwand etwas zu Essen gibt.
Stars – Stars – Stars
2011 konnten wir reichlich Filmstars hautnah erleben.
Da waren Isabella Rossellini, die Präsidentin
der Jury, Jeremy Irons und Kevin Spacey mit
“Margin Call”, Ralph Fiennes der “Coriolanus”
vorgestellt hat, mit den Stars Gerard
Butler und Vanessa Redgrave. Jeff
Bridges und Josh Brolin kamen für “True
Grit”, Colin Firth und Helena Bonham
Carter mit “The King’s Speech”, Diane
Kruger für den Abschlussfilm „Unknown
Identity“ und viele, viele andere. Trotz
February is a cold winter month in Berlin. Cold and dark
and windy. But not everywhere! With a sizzling Film Festival
such as the “Berlinale”, who cares about the cold?
It’s a must for film-lovers, it’s one of Germany’s most exciting
events!
From February 9th to 19th 2012, more than 400 films
are shown at various venues all over the city. Berlin is
particularly proud to host this Festival, most likely the
biggest public festival in the world, a magnet for filmaficionados.
The festival is divided into different film sections, such
as “big” international movies competing for the prestigious
awards Gold and Silver Bears, experimental films
and independent art house productions from all over the
world, documentaries, films for children and teen-agers,
German productions, a big retrospective, short features
as well as a culinary cinema section combining films
with fine dining.

In 2011, we certainly got our annual dose of celebrity-gazing
thanks to the presence of stars such
as Isabella Rossellini as the Jury President, Jeremy
Irons and Kevin Spacey with “Margin Call”, Ralph Fiennes
presenting his first feature “Coriolanus” with
his stars Gerard Butler and Vanessa Redgrave, Jeff
Bridges and Josh Brolin for “True Grit”, Colin Firth
and Helena-Bonham Carter with “The King’s Speech”,
Diane Kruger for „Unknown Identity“ and many
more...

es immer irgendwie möglich ein Foto
oder ein Autogramm zu ergattern.
Filme – Filme – Filme
Einige der Filme wird man sicher nicht
so schnell vergessen: Wim Wenders
3-D-Film „Pina“ über die Tänzerin
und Choreografin Pina Bausch,
den humorvollen “Almaniya” über
türkisches Leben in Deutschland, die
unwiderstehlichen “Femmes du 6ème
étage”, den bezaubernden Film “The
Future” mit Miranda July, und den in
Berlin gedrehten “Unknown Identity”,
bei dem das Berliner Publikum besonders
die pyrotechnischen Effekte
genoss und sich am Wegbomben der
vertrauten Berliner Sehenswürdigkeiten
erfreute.
Der Goldene Bär ging 2011 an den
iranischen Film “Nader und Simin - eine
Trennung”. Iranische Filmkunst war
aber auch anders präsent: Bei den
Plätzen der Jury gab es während des
gesamten Festivals einen leeren Stuhl,
den von Jafar Panahi, der nicht kommen
konnte, weil er in seiner Heimat zu 6
Jahren Haft und 20 Jahren Berufsverbot
verurteilt worden war. In einem
ergreifenden Brief an die Berlinale
schrieb er, dass es ihm jetzt verboten
ist zu schreiben, zu denken und Filme
zu machen, aber dass es ihm immer
noch erlaubt ist zu träumen.
Wer wird 2012 zur 62. Berlinale
kommen? Das ist noch ein großes
Geheimnis. Einige Namen werden
schon geflüstert, aber das offizielle
Programm gibt es erst im Januar. Eins
ist aber sicher: Es wird wieder eine
Berlinale fürs Publikum. Also macht
euch auf den Weg nach Berlin und
reiht euch ein in die Schlangen am
Potsdamer Platz, um Karten, Fotos
oder ein Autogramm zu ergattern.

Some memorable movies to name
a few: “Pina” a hauntingly beautiful
movie about late dancer Pina
Bausch, filmed in 3-D by German
director Wim Wenders, the humorous
“Almaniya” about Turkish life in
Germany, the irresistible “Femmes
du 6ème étage”, the delightful “The
Future” with Miranda July, “Unknown
identity”, a thriller filmed in Berlin,
with Berliner audiences roaring
during some pyrotechnical scenes
with spectacular explosions blowing
up familiar Berliner landmarks and
buildings.
The Golden Bear 2011 went to Iranian
film “Nader and Simin – a separation”.
Speaking of Iranian Cinema,
there was a symbolic empty chair
among the jury members: Iranian
filmmaker Jafar Panahi was absent,
unable to attend as his country’s regime
sentenced him to 6 years in prison
and to a 20 years prohibition to
practice his profession. He wrote a
poignant letter to the Berlin Film Festival,
stating that he was condemned
to “no writing, no thinking, no
film-making”, however he was still
allowed to dream…
Who will come in 2012, for 62nd
Berlinale? This still is a big mystery!
Some names are already being
whispered but the official program
will not be published until January.
One thing is sure: it’s going
to be a star-studded extravaganza
again! So,
bundle-up and head
to the heart of the
festival at Potsdamer
Platz!
