ANZEIGE
The world
of Georgian
wine making
The people of Georgia have
been producing wine for
thousands of years, and now
tourists are getting a taste
Georgian history has been intertwined with
the history of wine making for as long as
8.000 years; archaeologists have discovered
that locals were already cultivating vines in
6.000 BC. Georgia’s popularity among modern
wine connoisseurs might also have something
to do with its 500 varieties of grape, many
microclimates, and its unique ancient wine
making technology, which is part of UNESCO
Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The most prominent wine region of Georgia
is Kakheti, where the largest amounts of grape
varieties are grown. The area boasts castles,
churches, the beautiful and fertile Alazani Valley
and the white peaks of the Caucasus Mountains.
Kakheti’s huge potential for the
development of wine tourism has been
noticed by the World Tourism Organization
(UNWTO). Between 7 and 9 September 2016,
the First UNWTO Global Conference on Wine
Tourism will be held there. International
and domestic wine specialists and industry
representatives from all over the world will
meet to discuss the future of wine tourism,
and discover the treasures of the local
vineyards and cellars.
