Kota Ezawa, Dead Troops Talk, 2007
Computer, basierend auf dem Foto Walls.
Dann stellte ich davon ein 35mm-Dia her
und druckte es in einem Buch ab. Schließlich
machte ich eine Papiercollage, basierend
auf meiner digitalen Zeichnung. Diese
Collage hatte exakt die Größe meines
C-Prints, der ein 100%-iger Scan der Collage
ist.
Kota Ezawa erkundet in seiner Arbeit Formen
der Aneignung und Vermittlung aktueller
Ereignisse und Bilder. Er übersetzt Film-
und Videobilder ebenso wie Fotomotive in
vereinfachte Zeichnungen und Animationen,
die die Komplexität des ursprünglichen Bildmaterials
auf essenzielle, zweidimensionale
Elemente reduzieren. Für seine Dia-Installation
On Photography, die er für das Santa
Monica Museum of Art realisierte, wählte
der Künstler zwanzig Bilder aus, die unterschiedliche
Beispiele der Fotografiege-
schichte repräsentieren – von den 1860er-
Jahren bis in die Gegenwart. So waren
etwa Presse- und Kunstfotografien ebenso
vertreten wie Performance-Dokumentationen;
einige der Bilder besaßen geradezu
ikonischen Charakter, andere Motive dagegen
waren völlig unbekannt. Seine Motivauswahl
wurde zunächst auf Zeichenpapier
übertragen, anschließend als 35-mm-
Dias reproduziert und schließlich als Loop
wieder und wieder projiziert. Die Installation,
die an einen Diavortrag in einem Hörsaal
erinnerte, präsentierte sich so als kritischer
visueller Essay, in dem nicht Wörter,
sondern digitale Zeichnungen dazu dienten,
die Geschichte des Mediums zu erkunden.
What I attempt to do is to allow snakes to
bite their own tails. One example is this
photograph. A C-print, it started out as Jeff
Wall’s famous battlefield photograph Dead
Troops Talk. I made a box like Jeff Wall, and
then a drawing on my computer based on
the Jeff Wall photograph. Next, I produced
it as a 35mm slide and printed it in a book.
Finally, I made a paper cutout collage based
on my digital drawing. The paper collage
was exactly the size of my C-print, which is
a 100% scan of the collage.
Kota Ezawa’s work explores the appropriation
and mediation of current events and images.
He translates found film, video, and
photographic footage into simplified drawings
and animations that reduce complex
imagery to its most essential, two-dimensional
elements. For his slide installation
On Photography, created specifically for
the Santa Monica Museum of Art, Ezawa
selected twenty images representing various
examples from the history of photography—from
the eighteen-sixties to the present,
and from the iconic to the unrecognizable,
ranging in source from journalism, and
performance documentation, to art photography.
His choices were then manually
traced, turned back into 35mm slide format,
and projected on a continuous loop. Mimicking
the feel of a university slide lecture,
On Photography functioned as a visual critical
essay, using digital drawings instead of
words to explore and reveal the history of
the medium.
