Up for
classics with
a twist?
Plan
Opera in the garden
Living la dolce vita in evening dress
Florence (31 August – 3 September)
Musically speaking, the New Generation
Festival is the polar opposite of the festivals
popular with the younger generation it
hopes to attract. There’s classical and opera
instead of electro and rock, evening gowns
rather than itchy face glitter, black ties in
place of naked torsos and picnic baskets full
of Florentine specialities – including vegan
and gluten-free options – rather than baked
beans from a can. The whole spectacle
takes place in the Corsini Gardens, in a welltended
orangery filled with lush greenery
and fragrant lemon trees instead of a
rubbish-infested mud bath. It’s a place where
even hardcore ravers can discover their love
of Donizetti’s comic opera L’elisir d’amore
and Beethoven’s Fifth. Recommended for
anyone in their thirties feeling it’s time to do
grown-up stuff. Under-35s even get a young
person’s discount.
Plan
Cinema on the beach
Bring your own chair
Los Angeles (until 21 October)
This cinema has a modern twist, even when
it’s showing old classics: audiences watch
the movies on a huge inflatable screen
moored to the sand at the Beachfront
Cinema on Huntington Beach, south of LA.
Movie-goers who don’t want to pay extra
for one of the beanbags in the front rows
can bring their favourite portable seats from
home – provided they’re no higher than
80cm. As well as recent hits such as La La
Land (3 September), this open-air cinema
screens cult films such as Top Gun (30
September) and Jaws (19 August). In fact,
the odd great white shark has actually been
spotted swimming past Huntington Beach.
