MEISSEN ® painter Elke Juckelandt has taken a mid-to-late 18th-century
tabatière, or snuff box, and turned it into a miniature treasure chest.
She has consciously departed from the motifs traditionally adopted in
snuff-box painting in the way she has decorated the little box. She based
her own motifs on works by the Czech artist Alfons Mucha (1860-
1939), a painter, graphic artist, illustrator and industrial artist in the art
nouveau style. This movement, which emerged in the last years of the
19th century and peaked in the early 1900s, had wearied of the constantly
recurring shapes and methods resorted to in the applied arts and
now set about looking for new forms of expression. Its exponents advocated
naturalness, flowing forms and uncluttered functional beauty as
antidotes both to obsolescent standards and clichés and to an industrialisation
that was regarded as being soulless.
In ein kleines Schatzkästchen hat die Meissener Malerin Elke Juckelandt
die Tabatiere, eine Dose zum Aufbewahren von Schnupftabak, aus
der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts verwandelt. Bewusst ist sie mit
der Dekoration der kleinen Dose von den traditionellen Motiven der Tabatierenmalerei
abgewichen. Vorlagen für ihre Motive fand sie in den
Arbeiten des tschechischen Künstlers Alfons Mucha (1860–1939),
einem Maler, Grafiker, Illustrator und Kunstgewerbler des Jugendstils.
Diese Bewegung, die sich im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert bildete und
in den 1920er-Jahren ihren Höhepunkt hatte, war die sich ständig wiederholenden
Formen und Methoden in der angewandten Kunst leid
und suchte nach neuen Ausdrucksformen. Um überholten Normen und
Klischees, aber auch der als seelenlos verstandenen Industrialisierung
etwas entgegenzusetzen, idealisierte sie Natürlichkeit, fließende
Formen und die funktionale, einfache Schönheit.
