Willkommen in Sambia
Welcome to Zambia
richtig gut eingelebt habe.
In
meiner sambischen Schwester Martha habe ich eine
I have been in Zambia for a little more than two months
now and I have to say that I have already settled in
pretty well. Of course, I experienced a moderate
cultural shock in the first few days, but the people here
have welcomed us in a very warm and friendly way.
We even went to the Victoria Falls. Although they did
not have a lot of water at that time, they were a very
impressive sight to behold.
After a week of settling in, we were sent to our host
families. I was very excited and they received me
very warmly. They made me a very tasty welcoming
cake and we talked and laughed a lot. I have found a
very good conversation buddy in my Zambian sister
Martha. In my new Zambian family we have an open
relation. My Tonga name is Chabilo,
which means something like jubilee or
cheering.
Unfortunately I often have to face black
outs and small availability of water, but
we always find solutions to get through
these hours.
After the first few weeks of living with
my Zambian family I had to choose a
work place, and I picked working at the
local hospital, which is why I am now
working in the maternity ward. It is a
very exciting and wonderful work.
I have slowly started to learn Tonga,
which is the most commonly spoken
language in my region. So far, I only
know how to greet people, but who
knows how much I will know in a year.
The people in Chikuni are very friendly.
We are lucky, because we have a very
talented seamstress living close by, and I
have already gotten two very beautifully
stunning dresses from her. The clothes
are made from Chitenge, which is a cloth
with colorful designs and patterns that
the women here wear as a kind of skirt.
It also serves as protection from dirt and
it just looks beautiful.
