Dave Hoyland has been at Lenzing for a year now and manages
the Business Unit Nonwoven Fibers. He joined Lenzing
through the acquisition of the Anglo-American Tencel group
– and is responsible for one of the most rapidly growing divisions.
His expectations for the future are suitably high, and are well supported
by data and facts.
Hoyland expects strong growth in nonwovens over the coming
years. For example, in the last five years nonwoven sales have
grown from less than 10% of total group fiber sales to over 30%.
It is not surprising that other branches of industry are envious of
such growth rates. The main areas of application for nonwoven
fibers are consumer products in the hygiene, medical and technical
application sectors – sectors which do not display the cyclical
demand behavior typical of traditional textiles.
"We see growth in all three main sales regions of the US, Europe
and of course in Asia, especially China", said Hoyland.
There are two main reasons for the increase in nonwovens demand,
(i) consumers have more disposable income linked to increasingly
busy lives and therefore are willing to pay for the convenience
and efficiency of a disposable limited use product, and
(ii) the sophistication and effectiveness of nonwovens is continually
developing to expand the applications in which they can

David Hoyland ist seit einem Jahr bei Lenzing und leitet die
Business Unit Nonwoven Fibers. Durch die Übernahme der
amerikanisch-britischen Firmengruppe Tencel zu Lenzing gestoßen,
ist er für einen der am stärksten wachsenden Bereiche
verantwortlich. Dementsprechend hoch sind seine Zukunftserwartungen.
Für die kommenden Jahre erwartet Hoyland ein starkes Wachstum
bei Nonwovens. So wurde in den letzten fünf Jahren der
Nonwovens-Umsatz von weniger als 10% des Konzerngesamtumsatzes
bei Fasern auf über 30% gesteigert, was bei anderen
Branchen verständlicherweise einen gewissen Neid hervorruft.
Nonwovens-Fasern werden in erster Linie zur Herstellung
von Hygiene-, medizinischen und technischen Artikeln im
Verbraucherproduktbereich eingesetzt.
„Alle drei Hauptabsatzgebiete, die USA, Europa und Asien, speziell
China, lassen Wachstum erkennen“, so Hoyland. Maßgeblich
für die Nachfragesteigerung sind zum einen der Umstand, dass
den Verbrauchern immer mehr Einkommen zur Verfügung steht
und sie bereit sind, einen entsprechenden Preis für die Bequemlichkeit
und Effizienz von Einmalerzeugnissen mit begrenzter Nutzungsdauer
zu bezahlen und zum anderen die Tatsache, dass
