Lenzing Inside is the first international platform for our group of
companies. The idea behind Lenzing Inside was to create a
magazine with stories about Lenzing stretching beyond the
confines of individual locations, of which there are many...
We have gained a new international focus, with our new company
structure: the acquisition of Tencel and the start of construction
of our new production plant in China. Lenzing is now
more international than ever – we are now a group of companies
with global business units and are taking on the new challenges
under optimal organizational conditions.
Many Lenzing employees live thousands of kilometers away
from each other. However, they are united by one thing: the
production and marketing of first-class quality products and,
above all, excellent customer support.
And a world class company should also have its own top international
magazine, like Lenzing Inside.
I hope you enjoy reading it.
WORLD RECORD WITH LENZING PROFILEN ® SOCKS
Extreme sportsman Hubert Gantioler has set a new record in
cross country skiing, with the support of a functional Lenzing
product. Gantioler wears running socks made from Lenzing
PROFILEN ® threads during all sports activities. They prevent
skin irritation and blisters even under extreme duress, due to
their low friction. Perspiration is eliminated and the feet remain
warm and dry, as was the case with Gantioler’s latest world
record attempt, when he managed a height of 8,335 meters in
twelve hours on cross country skis at the beginning of the year.
verhindern. Der Schweiß wird abtransportiert und die Füße
bleiben warm und trocken. So auch bei dem jüngsten Weltrekord
Hubert Gantiolers, der Anfang des Jahres in zwölf Stunden
auf Langlaufskiern 8.335 Höhenmeter bewältigte.
At the end of the projects,
TWICE THE ENERGY
Lenzing is planning two pioneering investments
in the energy supply for fiber and
pulp production at the Lenzing site and for
the surrounding municipality. Lenzing will
construct a new energy boiler that uses
thick liquor, a by-product of cellulose production,
as fuel. A total of EUR 43 mill. will
be invested in the project.
The second project will optimize three small
Lenzing-owned hydroelectric power plants.
A fourth, privately owned plant, is also included
in the project. Electricity generation
will almost double and the Ager river’s water
quality will improve. In total, EUR eight
mill. will be invested in the project.
ZWEI MAL MEHR ENERGIE
Am Standort Lenzing sind zwei wegweisende
Investitionen in die Energieversorgung
der Faser- und Zellstoffproduktion
und der umliegenden Gemeinden geplant.
Die Lenzing AG wird um 43 Mio. EUR
einen neuen Laugenkessel errichten. Als
Brennstoff wird Dicklauge, ein Nebenprodukt
der Zellstofferzeugung, eingesetzt.
Beim zweiten Projekt werden drei kleine
Flusskraftwerke der Lenzing AG gemeinsam
mit einem vierten privaten Klein-Kraftwerk,
optimiert. Die Stromerzeugung wird dadurch
fast verdoppelt, die Wasserqualität
der Ager weiter verbessert. In das Projekt
werden acht Mio. EUR investiert.
Lenzing Goes to China
Lenzing Goes to China
The decision to establish a separate viscose fiber production plant in China heralds a new
era for the Lenzing Group. The globalization of the largest viscose fiber manufacturer in the
world is progressing rapidly.
Chinese business is booming and offers annual growth rates in double digits.
Boomendes Chinageschäft: zweistellige Wachstumsraten jährlich.
We made a conscious decision to construct a 60,000 ton
production plant on site together with a reliable partner.
This ensures optimal plant operation", was how the Chairman of
the Management Board at Lenzing Thomas Fahnemann described
Lenzing’s latest coup.
Business is booming in China. The strategic orientation of Chinese
industry towards the textile sector led to enormous annual
growth rates in double digits. A total of 800,000 tons of viscose
fibers are currently processed in China – making China the
world’s largest viscose consumer. The main area of application
is the clothing industry, both for export and for the rapidly growing
domestic demand from the fashion-conscious Chinese.
Chinese spinning industry customers place high value on using
locally-made products. "We have learned that the textile industry
will only accept imported fibers if there is absolutely no
local alternative. An understandable attitude in view of current
import duties", says Thomas Fahnemann. Analyses have shown
that China will considerably increase fiber capacity for viscose
in coming years. "It became clear to us then, that we could only
protect our strong market position from competitors by going into
local production", commented Fahnemann.
An industrial park near the famous historic city of Nanjing was
chosen as the site for this. The chemical companies BASF and

DSM are situated in the immediate vicinity, which means that industry-related
services with an emphasis on chemicals can be
bought more easily. The company will be founded as a joint venture
with the Nanjing Chemical Fibre Co., Ltd (NCFC), and having
a local partner will be extremely helpful for several local tasks –
such as dealing with official channels, infrastructure issues, land
purchase etc. NCFC is investing in setting up supply and waste
disposal plants. NCFC already manufactures viscose and has a
30% interest in the joint venture. NCFC is the seventh-largest fiber
manufacturer in China. With 2,000 employees and turnover of almost
USD 90 million, NCFC is a respected company in its sector.
The new plant will manufacture products not just for the textile
industry, but also for the booming nonwovens industry in Asia.
Investment costs are around USD 70 million. After an 18-month
construction period, commissioning is expected to take place at
the end of 2006. Lenzing Technik will provide expertise and its
own key components, but a large part of the investment will be
covered by local suppliers. Thus Lenzing will be optimally combining
Western technology with the favorable investment costs
of China.
With the new plant in China, Lenzing will have located around
half of its viscose capacity in Asia. Fahnemann sees entry into
China as an important globalization step. "Lenzing has consistently
built up the Chinese market in the last five years. Just one
year ago, we opened a large commercial firm in Shanghai. As
world market leader, we must aim to become one of the largest
providers of viscose fibers in China, as in other regions worldwide."
◆
In unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft befinden
US-Dollar.
Investitionskosten in China optimal kombinieren.
Jahren sehr konsequent aufgebaut.
Thomas Fahnemann: “We must aim to become one of the largest providers of viscose fibers in China.”
the Lenzing Group.
Herbert Hummer ist
der „Mister China“
der Lenzing Gruppe.
The construction of the viscose fiber plant
Planning is already in full swing and the first construction
work (deep foundations) has already begun. "A lot of
processes will have to run simultaneously, e.g. building
completion and assembly", said Herbert Hummer when
describing the ambitious timeframe. Hummer, who has
worked for Lenzing since 1989 (some of that time in China)
will be "Mister China" for the Lenzing Group over the
next few years, and is General Manager of Lenzing (Nanjing)
Fibers. Working at his side are Alois Reif, a China
expert who was previously an engineer at Lenzing, and
Herbert Hinterleitner who is responsible for electrical and
control engineering.
China enthusiast Hummer also denies the usual prejudice
that environmental protection regulations are not taken quite
as seriously here as in the West: "We are building in accordance
with European environmental standards. For example,
the pollutant purification equipment is from Denmark. It
is clear that we, as the market leader, are setting the standard
in China in terms of environmental parameters."
in China Standards.“

The Turkish textile industry is one of the most important branches of
industry in the country. Its growth into a global contender on the textile
market is reflected by the development of the company Karsu.
W
e meet “Mr. Karsu” himself, Dr. Sait Molu, in his office
near Istanbul, together with his top managers, Metin
Molu, Mustafa Molu and Dr. Atilla T. Alptekin. Dr. Sait Molu is a
typical successful Turkish entrepreneur. He runs the company
together with members of this family. His father, Arif Molu, was
also a successful textile businessman, and the founder of Karsu.
With sales of approximately EUR 60 million in 2004, Karsu Tekstil
is one of the top 500 companies in Turkey today.
Karsu Tekstil has positioned itself on the market mainly as a
modal and viscose specialist. In fact, Karsu is the leading modal
processor worldwide. “In the 1990s we invested in the production
of modal fibers, because we really believed in the future of
this fiber,” says Karsu’s managing director.
The company, founded in 1973, began as a spinning mill with
25,000 spindles. Success in the export market, particularly in the
1980s, led to the expansion of the factory to currently 110,000
spindles. Lenzing is one of Karsu Tekstil’s most important suppliers,
and has been cultivating a close relationship with this Turkish
partner for many years. Karsu Tekstil produces 15,000 tons
of yarn annually, and the spinning mill is still the company’s core
business. In 1998 it started producing ready-made garments,
on this aspect of ready-made production,” Sait Molu explains.
“After all, we are aiming for perfection.”
Karsu Tekstil produces merchandise for international labels
such as the Camel Collection, Levi’s, Dockers and Newman,
and has even introduced its own brand called prima luce. The
Karsu Tekstil yarn is produced in the principal factory near the
town Kayseri, in the center of Turkey. The cloth is woven in Kayseri,
as well as in Hadimöky, a suburb of Istanbul. Dyeing and finishing
take place in the company’s own dye-works, 200 km
northwest of Istanbul, near the Bulgarian border. And the readymade
clothing factory, Karsu Garments, is also located in Hadimköy.
Karsu Tekstil sees itself as a specialist. And, what is quite rare
in this line of business, Karsu, in cooperation with Lenzing, passes
its knowledge on to its customers. In Karsu Tekstil seminars,
customers are given tips on the processing of the yarn. Here Karsu
cloth production and ready-made clothing serve as a benchmark.
The important thing here is direct customer contact.
Viscose-Baumwollmischungen konzentrierte.
Karsu has also made a name for itself in the areas of art and
Lenzing Inside: How does a Turkish company become a
leading modal processor?
Metin Molu: In 1990 we recognized the future potential of
modal, and developed the market.
Lenzing Inside: How did Karsu actually get into the production
of fabrics made of viscose and modal?
Dr. Sait Molu: Yarns form our core business. But we also
had our own weaving mill, which we joined with Karsu in
2003. After that, in terms of weaving we also started to
specialise in modal, tencel, viscose and blends, in order to
go as far as we could in this area. Now 15% of our earnings
come from cloth and ready-made clothing.
Lenzing Inside: Do you think that you have better prospects
on the local market or in export?
Metin Molu: About 20-25% is exported directly by us. However,
we know that between 85% and 90% of all endproducts
also end up being exported.
Lenzing Inside: And, finally, what is the cornerstone of
your success?
Erfolges?
Dr. Sait Molu: First things first.
so Karsu-Vorstand Mustafa Molu.
The TENCEL ® brand
enjoys a high level
of recognition in the
clothing sector.
Der Markenname
TENCEL ® hat in der
Bekleidungsbranche
einen hohen Bekanntheitsgrad.
The New Lenzing Fibers Textile Brands
Die neuen Lenzing Fibers Textilmarken
With the acquisition of the Tencel Group and its two lyocell
production sites in the US and Great Britain, one of the
most successful brands in the textile industry joins the Lenzing
Group. The TENCEL ® brand enjoys a high level of recognition,
particularly in the clothing sector. Considerable marketing expenditure
by Tencel in recent years is now also benefiting the
Lenzing Group. A prominent characteristic of TENCEL ® is its
presence in the Anglo-American region and in Asia. TENCEL ®
labels, even separate store-in-store concepts (shelves which exclusively
contain TENCEL ® products), can be found in up-market
women’s and men’s wear departments in New York, as well
as Singapore and London.
The level of recognition and brand value of TENCEL ® suggested
using TENCEL ® as the new umbrella brand name for all
types of lyocell fibers in the Lenzing Group. The next step was
the integration of the TENCEL ® brand into the "outfit" of successful
and equally well-known Lenzing brands, with the stylized leaf symbolizing
the naturalness of Lenzing products.
The logical conclusion is a new TENCEL ® Logo that fits in with
the other Lenzing brands. The aim is to help the TENCEL ® brand
towards a level of recognition and positioning in the home textile
sector in Continental Europe equal to that of Lenzing Lyocell ®.
In the course of integrating TENCEL ® into the Lenzing brand
family, the existing Lenzing brand logos have undergone a facelift,
and now have a uniform brand appearance.
Lenzing Label as Seal of Approval. Dieter Eichinger, who is in charge
of marketing in the Business Unit Textile Fibers at Lenzing Fibers,
explains the importance of the now optimally-arranged brand
appearance of the Lenzing Group: "Lenzing fibers are absolutely
high-quality products on the international market. This is why
we provide our customers with fabrics from Lenzing Fibers which
have Lenzing labels. In this way, the high-quality products can
be easily distinguished from the competition." This label service
has since been used by many fabric manufacturers, who use various
types of Lenzing fibers. "We issue around 100 million labels
with our brands annually. They signal to the consumer that they
have a top-quality product with the best wearing properties."
There are certain prerequisites to be met before a product can
be certified with a Lenzing Fibers label: the minimum content of
Lenzing fibers is 30%, the origin of the fiber must be proven and
the quality of the product must be verified by the manufacturer
on an on-going basis. "In this way, we make sure that Lenzing
labels – whether TENCEL ® , Lenzing Modal ® or Lenzing Viscose ®
and ProViscose ® – are all equally recognized as hallmarks of topquality
products", said Dieter Eichinger. ◆
Trageeigenschaften.“
Für die Zertifizierung eines Produktes mit einem Lenzing Faser-
Label müssen bestimmte Voraussetzungen vorliegen: Der Lenzing
Continued Dreams of Growth
Anhaltendes Wachstum bei Nonwovens
David Hoyland, General Manager of the Business Unit Nonwoven Fibers in the
Lenzing Group, talks about opportunities for growth over the next few years
David Hoyland, Leiter der Business Unit Nonwovens in der Lenzing Gruppe, über
Wachstumschancen in den kommenden Jahren
TEXT: ESTHER MITTERSTIELER
Dave Hoyland has been at Lenzing for a year now and manages
the Business Unit Nonwoven Fibers. He joined Lenzing
through the acquisition of the Anglo-American Tencel group
– and is responsible for one of the most rapidly growing divisions.
His expectations for the future are suitably high, and are well supported
by data and facts.
Hoyland expects strong growth in nonwovens over the coming
years. For example, in the last five years nonwoven sales have
grown from less than 10% of total group fiber sales to over 30%.
It is not surprising that other branches of industry are envious of
such growth rates. The main areas of application for nonwoven
fibers are consumer products in the hygiene, medical and technical
application sectors – sectors which do not display the cyclical
demand behavior typical of traditional textiles.
"We see growth in all three main sales regions of the US, Europe
and of course in Asia, especially China", said Hoyland.
There are two main reasons for the increase in nonwovens demand,
(i) consumers have more disposable income linked to increasingly
busy lives and therefore are willing to pay for the convenience
and efficiency of a disposable limited use product, and
(ii) the sophistication and effectiveness of nonwovens is continually
developing to expand the applications in which they can
The main areas of
application for nonwoven
fibers are hygienic and
medical products.
Die Haupteinsatzgebiete
für Nonwovens-Fasern
sind Hygieneartikel und
medizinische Produkte.
Nonwovens 21
Business Unit Nonwoven Fibers.
Verbraucherproduktbereich eingesetzt.
„Alle drei Hauptabsatzgebiete, die USA, Europa und Asien, speziell
China, lassen Wachstum erkennen“, so Hoyland.
22 Nonwovens
provide an effective consumer desirable solution. Perhaps the
best current example of this is the hugely successful market in
moist cleaning wipes (‘wet wipes’). This market started on the
basis of the preferred solution for baby hygiene and has developed
into a multi-billion dollar global business offering a solution
to almost any personal consumer or household cleaning
task. Medical, hygiene and consumer products in general are experiencing
strong economic growth, according to Hoyland.
Why is Lenzing placing such high emphasis on the nonwovens
segment? According to Hoyland, it is simply to balance things out
and ensure the most robust diversity possible in Lenzing’s fiber
sales portfolio in terms of geography, demographics and end use
applications. While 65% to 70% of current group fiber sales are
still in traditional textiles, Hoyland believes that by 2010 the split
between textile and nonwovens fiber sales will be almost 50:50.
Increasing prosperity has triggered a mega trend in health and
wellbeing, which will greatly benefit the nonwovens industry.
The most important target for over the next few years is growth
in our share of the North American market, which currently consumes
over 50,000 tons of viscose (and lyocell) fibers per year.
Hoyland wants to increase the current market share of 25% to between
50% and 60% over the next two years. At the moment, many
nonwoven products are imported into North America from Europe,
Asia and the Middle East. But significant new capacity is being
created in the USA which will make it an increasingly important
strategic market for the Lenzing nonwovens fibers business.
Background: the strategic decision to enter the nonwovens area
David Hoyland
By 2010 the split between textile and nonwovens
fiber sales will be almost 50:50.
Bis 2010 soll sich das Umsatzverhältnis Textilien/Nonwovens
an die Marke von 50:50 annähern.
David Hoyland | David Hoyland has been managing the
Lenzing Business Unit Nonwoven Fibers since May 2004.
Born in England and with a Doctorate in Organic Chemistry,
he has over 20 years of experience in viscose. He
joined the research team of Courtaulds in 1984, where he
worked on process and product development. In 1988 he
joined the Viscose Division in Mobile, Alabama, and worked
there on special projects in Technical Services. After
one year, he returned to Britain as Manager of Technical
Services for the Viscose Division in Europe. In 1996, Dave
Hoyland moved to sales and became Manager of Nonwovens
Sales in Europe. His hobbies are sports such as cycling,
swimming, and walking (Also drinking wine!). He has
three children: Robert, Justine and Alexander.
Increasing prosperity will greatly benefit the nonwovens segment.
was taken by the Lenzing management around ten years ago,
because even then the huge growth opportunities were becoming
apparent. In addition to offering substantial growth opportunities,
nonwovens is also less cyclical than traditional textiles, providing
for a greater degree of stability and predictability in the
overall Lenzing fibers business.
Hoyland has set the following targets for the Business Unit Nonwoven
Fibers over the next two to three years:
• Market share in Europe must as a minimum be maintained at current
levels (approx 60%).
• There must be clear growth in North America.
• The Chinese market should be established with the company’s
own nonwovens production plant coming on stream at the end of
2006.
• The range of end use applications must continue to be expanded
by a combination of product innovation and new business
development.
The balance between the end product applications should improve.
That means more business in the medical and healthcare sectors
to compliment the already strong position in consumer products. In
two to three years, these areas should have a 50:50 balance. At the
moment, consumer products make up around 70%. ◆
Derzeit machen
die Verbraucherprodukte noch rund 70 % aus. ◆

Lyocell fibers and the brand TENCEL ® have not only been extremely successful in
Good and restful sleep is important for our wellbeing, whereby
it is not so much the amount of sleep as the quality that
is crucial. No matter how long one sleeps at night, if that sleep
consists of countless short sleep and waking phases, during
which one is bathed in sweat and tosses and turns in bed, there
can only be one outcome: complete exhaustion upon waking,
and the feeling that one has not slept at all.
For good and deep sleep with a high restorative value, the sleeping
microclimate under the bedlinen is decisive. Since the human
body produces about 0.4 liters of perspiration per night during
sleep, the removal of this amount of moisture is very important.
Poor moisture removal leads to the well known phenomenon of
night sweats, resulting in considerable discomfort to the sleeper.
What is the best sleep fiber? Researchers for Lenzing AG have
now proved conclusively what pioneers of modern home textiles
such as the Austrian company Hefel had long since suspected:
TENCEL ® is the best “sleep fiber” of all, because, compared with
all other textile fibers, it provides superior moisture management.
criteria were water vapor absorption capacity and buffering capacity
vis-à-vis water vapor. These two characteristics determine
the level of dampness under the comforter. The lower the level of
moisture in the bed, the higher the degree of sleeping comfort.
The results were unequivocal: TENCEL ® FILL achieved the best
results by far in terms of buffering effect even with increased sweat
ahead even of wool and down, and far ahead of polyester. However,
it was demonstrated that polyester's performance was considerably
improved in a 50:50 blend with TENCEL ® FILL.
The next step involved a comparison of comforter shells made
Successfully combat itching with TENCEL ®
Patients with chronic skin diseases such as psoriasis and
atopic syndrome often suffer from unbearable itching.
Textiles made of wool and synthetic fibers with rough surfaces
can aggravate these symptoms. A study carried out
by Heidelberg University Hospital proved that clothing
made out of TENCEL ® can considerably reduce itching.
On the one hand, this is because of the high comfort factor
and optimum moisture management provided by TEN-
CEL ® and, on the other, its particularly soft surface. Patients
reported that textiles made of TENCEL ® were extremely
pleasant to wear and that they reduced itching considerably.
"The study shows good skin tolerance, particularly
compared to cotton. For this reason, textiles made of cellulose
are the best dermatological recommendation for patients
with both healthy and irritable skin", says German
skin specialist Prof. Thomas Diepgen.
to the filling fibers,” says Wilhelm Feilmair of the test results. This
demonstrated scientifically that TENCEL ® FILL and TENCEL ®
MICRO are the optimal combination for comforters because they
ensure better breathability, better vapor absorption and better
vapor circulation than all other comparable fibers and fillings.
Erfolgreicher Kampf dem Juckreiz mit TENCEL ®
Textiles 27
Patienten mit schweren Hautkrankheiten wie Psoriasis und
dem atopischen Syndrom leiden unter teilweise unerträglichem
Juckreiz.
doppelte Menge an Wasserdampf gegenüber Baumwolle aufnehmen
Schlafen Sie gut
Sappi Saiccor, headquartered in South Africa, is one of Lenzing’s
most important cellulose suppliers. Sappi operates in
an environmentally-friendly way on the Cape and have been doing
so for a surprisingly long time now. Money makes the world
go round – nowhere is this truer than in South Africa. Since the
discovery of almost inexhaustible gold reserves at the end of the
19th century, more than 50,000 tons of the precious metal have
been mined. The biggest gold rush of all time triggered enormous
flows of capital at the time; the simple agricultural country of the
Boer pioneers quickly became the most successful industrial
country in Africa. The effects manifested themselves in several
economic sectors: among other things, a huge number of stanchions
were needed for the underground seams, and these had
to be imported from Europe. South African silviculture was born.
For a tourist traveling to the world famous Kruger National
Park, this long tradition remains in evidence to this day: vast pine
and eucalyptus plantations thrive on both sides of the road; the
situation is similar in the province of Kwazulu-Natal. Both provinces
have the best climatic conditions for artificial forestation.
A eucalyptus or pine
tree grows quickly and
can be processed after
only 7 to 15 years.
Sappi 31
In diesen beiden Provinzen
herrschen die besten klimatischen Bedingungen für künstliche
Aufforstung.
So besitzt Sappi weiterhin 540.000 Hektar
32 Sappi
The company Sappi (see page 33) was created because, after
WW1, Pretoria planned to stop the South African union’s dependence
on wood imports on the one hand, and to allow private
companies to implement this strategic decision on the other.
In order to ensure sustainability, the companies were given
huge areas of land. This is why Sappi still has 540,000 hectares
of land on which 6.4 million tons of wood are produced every
year. An eucalyptus or pine tree grows quickly and can be
processed for paper after a mere 7 to 15 years.
Decades before conservationists began warning of the consequences
of the systematic deforestation of indigenous forests
worldwide, it was already known in sparsely wooded South Africa
that over-exploitation offered few prospects for the future. It is
fitting, therefore, that in recent years since democratization of the
Cape, Sappi has successfully introduced "Project Grow". The
growth project is also oriented towards sustainability: 10,000
farmers have not only received free seeds, but also accurate management
programs and advances, to guarantee wood production
for 20 years. "We are not using foreign materials, nor are we
touching indigenous forests and wood types", emphasized Mark
Albon, Sappi spokesman for wood cultivation in Kwazulu-Natal.
Not least, Sappi has fulfilled the requirements of the Genevabased
International Organization for Standardization – both in
relation to the environment (ISO 14001), and health and safety
(ISO 18000) – and is now a global leader in the area of sustainable
forestation.
Albon admits that conservation groups are warning about reforestation
of grassland – which makes up a quarter of the land in
South Africa – as the rapidly growing trees require too much ground
Sappi Saiccor was the first mill to produce dissolving pulp from Eucalyptus.
Normungsgemeinschaft „International Organization for Standardization“
About Sappi
The paper and cellulose producer Sappi (South African
Pulp and Paper Industries) was established in Johannesburg
in December 1936. The cellulose division Sappi Saiccor
is a global market leader and holds a market share of
around 15%. The paper company has been a global player
since 1990 as a result of acquisitions in Europe (including
Hannover Papier) and the US. Today, Sappi is a clear
market leader in high-gloss paper. Only 12% of total sales
are generated on the Cape, almost 50% in Europe, 30% in
North America. Unlike other giants on the Cape, which
have been switching to the London stock exchange in recent
years, the company is still headquartered in South
Africa – which company management attributes purely to
"economic patriotism". However, the fact remains that almost
two thirds of shares are in the hands of outside investors
– just under ten years ago 90% of shareholders
came from South Africa.
water. Sappi is currently using only three percent of the original
grassland area (33.4 million hectares) and almost half of this area
is recovering as harvest soil, mainly for corn production. In a conservation
and wetland area at St. Lucia, north of Durban, trees have
been systematically felled for years, if they are near courses of rivers
and biotopes. In the not too distant future, there will probably be
no more planted forests in the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park. Finally,
Sappi likes to stress that more than a quarter of the land owned
by the company has remained unplanted – which is a total surface
of more than 100,000 hectares. ◆
Player. Sappi ist heute klarer Marktführer bei Hochglanzpapier.
Nur noch 12% des Gesamtumsatzes werden am
Kap erwirtschaftet, fast 50% in Europa, 30% in Nordamerika.
begriffen haben will.
In
Safety, quality and environmental friendliness are paramount
in the new Airbus A380. For this reason, the EADS consortium
chose seat coverings for the first A380 that best meet all these
requirements. They selected the product Climatex ® Lifeguard
FR made by the Swiss company Lantal. Behind this product
name are Lenzing FR ® viscose fibers.
What is special about these seat coverings, apart from being
extremely flame retardant, is that they provide a high degree of
seating comfort and an optimal “seating climate”, which is particularly
important for long-haul flights. This is because of the high
degree of breathability and good moisture management offered
by Lenzing FR ® .
In the selection of material, ecological considerations also
played an important role. Fabrics made from Lenzing FR ® are
compostable and do not contain any toxic materials or environmentally
harmful chemicals.
From a couple of thousand dyes, only 16 were chosen that
met these stringent requirements. The new Airbus is exceptionally
environmentally friendly, and Lenzing FR ® has played an important
contributory role in this. ◆
When the new megajet Airbus A380 took off on its maiden flight on 27
April 2005, Lenzing went along for the ride: the seats on this super jet
are made with materials produced from Lenzing FR ® fibers.
Lenzing FR 35
Sicherheit, Qualität und Umweltschutz stehen beim neuen Airbus
A380 an oberster Stelle.
die all diesen Anforderungen optimal entsprechen. Die
Wahl fiel auf das Produkt Climatex ® Lifeguard FR des Schweizer
Unternehmens Lantal. Hinter dieser Produktbezeichnung stehen
Lenzing FR ® Viscosefasern.

New Wastewater Treatment Methods
Innovative Wege der Abwasserbehandlung
The Lenzing Group continues to pursue innovative paths in waste water treatment.
At the Lenzing site a new wastewater cleaning process for
the viscose fiber industry is being implemented: the "anaerobic
system for biological sulfate removal". This is also
the first time a biological wastewater treatment process has
been possible for sulfate. In addition to all internal measures
for re-using and reducing the sulfate salt load, as well as gypsum
precipitation which has been successfully used for sulfate
reduction since 2001, now another sulfate removal system
is available.
The use of bacteria for anaerobic sulfate removal was preceded
by extensive laboratory and pilot tests. In this context, Lenzing
worked closely with experts from the Technical University of
Vienna and the Dutch company Paques. As a result, up-to-date
scientific knowledge and company experience could be thoroughly
integrated into the solution.
The central part of the new system consists of three reactors
in which bacteria – in an air-free environment – convert the relevant
substances contained in the wastewater (primarily) into
sulfide and methane. In downstream systems sulfide is converted
into elemental sulfur, separated and recycled. The discharged
air produced by the bacteria, which contains methane, is used
for electricity and process heat generation.
zusammen. So konnten aktuelle wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse
In nachgeschalteten

Highly-loaded wastewater partial currents from viscose fiber
and pulp production are used for anaerobic wastewater treatment.
Because each biological wastewater treatment also needs
organic loads (carbon compounds), purely organically-loaded
production wastewater currents must be introduced in addition
to partial currents containing sulfate. These are also reduced
considerably in anaerobic breakdown. Furthermore, zinc precipitation
occurs in the inlet to the anaerobes using the sulfatecontaining
outflow of the anaerobic reactors. ◆
anaerobe Abwasserreinigung kommen hochbelastete Abwasserteilströme
aus der Viscosefaser- und Zellstoffproduktion zum
Einsatz. Da jede biologische Abwassereinigung auch organische
Frachten (Kohlenstoffverbindungen) benötigt, müssen neben den
sulfathältigen Teilströmen auch rein organisch belastete Produktionsabwasserströme
zugeführt werden. Diese werden im
anaeroben Abbau ebenfalls deutlich reduziert.
The Grass without Mowing
Der Rasen, der nie gemäht werden muss
LenzingGrass, a high-strength artificial turf made from plastic
threads for professional use is the answer to this problem.
On the one hand, LenzingGrass provides a playing surface
and appearance comparable to natural grass. On the other
hand, upkeep and maintenance costs are a third of those for natural
grass.
Owing to its strength, LenzingGrass has a service life 30 times
longer than a natural grass playing surface. In pure figures, this
equates to 4,400 playing hours a year, compared to around 150
with natural grass.
It is not surprising that LenzingGrass is a coveted product all
over the world. In Europe, for example, the pros play on LenzingGrass
fields in Basel (Switzerland), Lerino (Vicenza/Italy)
and in Kopa (Slovenia). In Austria, the Linz sports stadium, "Auf
der Gugl" was recently fitted with LenzingGrass.
At the end of 2004, the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations)
Executive Committee decided to permit artificial turf
at an international level. Matches in the Champions League, the
UEFA Cup, as well as qualifying matches for the European
Championship or World Cup can now be held on artificial turf
playing surfaces. ◆
LenzingGrass has a
longer than a natural
grass playing surface.
LenzingGrass hat
eine 30 Mal höhere
Nutzungsdauer als eine
Naturrasen-Spielfläche.
Sports field operators dream of having grass that is always green,
has not to be mown or watered and looks as good as new, even after
many competitions.
LenzingGrass Plätzen in Basel (Schweiz), Lerino (Vicenza/Italien)
oder in Kopa (Slowenien). In Österreich wurde kürzlich das Linzer
Sportstadion „Auf der Gugl“ mit LenzingGrass ausgerüstet.
Das Exekutivkomitee der Europäischen Fußball-Union hat Ende
2004 beschlossen, Kunstrasenbeläge auf internationaler Ebene
zuzulassen.

Lenzing Presents TENCEL ® at ITSE
Lenzing präsentiert auf türkischer Modemesse TENCEL ®
Turkey is a rapidly growing textile export market, making it
extremely interesting for Lenzing. For this reason, Lenzing
has had a strong presence at fairs in Istanbul for the past two
years, and placed the TENCEL ® fiber in the spotlight of the specialist
presentations at the spring ITSE fair (International Textile
Fair, Istanbul) in February 2005. The ITSE is one of the most important
international textile fairs in Turkey – foreign fashion companies
who bring their own designs and who want information
on what new fabrics are already on offer from Turkish manufacturers,
never miss the ITSE.
The Turkish textile industry is also planning a bundle of measures
aimed to trebling textile exports. A fashion center is being
established in Istanbul for this purpose, which will focus on the
study of design. The "Made in Turkey" label will be used even
more, and the ITSE will have a much more international focus.
With a shipping volume of over 30,000 tons per annum of Lenzing
fibers (Lenzing Viscose ®, Lenzing Modal ®, TENCEL ®), Turkey
is already an important export market for Lenzing. ◆
Das Label „Made in Turkey“ soll verstärkt
Lenzing Fasern (Lenzing Viscose ® , Lenzing Modal ® , TENCEL ® )

Lenzing – the Film
Lenzing – der Film
All facets of the Lenzing Group
Die Lenzing Gruppe von all ihren Seiten
A
fter approximately two years of work, the new Lenzing
company film is now complete. It shows all facets of the
Lenzing Group and its production facilities, products and employees.
Due to the dynamic growth of the Lenzing Group, the
script had to be altered time and again. The Austrian film-maker,
Werner Jambor, and his film team along with the head of
Lenzing Corporate Communications, Angelika Guldt, had to
start over a number of times because various changes, such as
the addition of new subsidiaries and the redesign of product logos,
had rendered the film out of date.
The result can, literally, not only be seen but also heard: in German,
English and Chinese. Interested parties can borrow a DVD
of the film from Corporate Communications. (E-Mail: k.schaider
Werner Jambor
Comments of a film-maker | "The story of Lenzing AG
and of the new Lenzing film have both turned out to be
success stories in the end – although they took their own
sweet time about it. As a global player, Lenzing did its
utmost to ensure that freshly filmed material started to
look old before it even reached the cutting room. Rightly
so, as we know. But try explaining to a graphic artist that
Lyocell is now called Tencel, and try explaining to a sound
engineer that since the first mix, not only the tonalities
have changed, but the facts too!”
Werner Jambor: "That is
the stuff that films are
made of."
Werner Jambor: "Das ist
der Stoff, aus dem man
Filme macht."
Konzernkommunikation Angelika Guldt musste mehrere Male zurück
an den Start, weil diverse Veränderungen den Film immer wieder
„alt aussehen“ ließen, so kamen etwa neue Tochtergesellschaften
