My affiliation with the <strong>Institut</strong>e is to allow me to pursue a research project based on the<br />
book manuscript I submitted recently to Columbia University Press, entitled Cultural<br />
Malaise and Contemporary Arab Critique. This new project is to produce a second book<br />
focused on the link between cultural critique and political critique in contemporary<br />
writings, and in this sense centered on the current Arab debates on Enlightenment. The<br />
<strong>Institut</strong>e provides me with the institutional framework and the research facilities (financial<br />
support, library, scientific community) to conduct this work. In connection with this<br />
project, I will be organizing in the coming spring a workshop at the <strong>Institut</strong>e on the same<br />
topic of cultural and political critique in the Arab world, gathering a number of Arab<br />
thinkers, mainly from Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.<br />
