G.B. Russia Transport Tunnels in Sochi For the Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014 the road and rail network between Adler Airport on the Black Sea coast and the Krasnaya Polyana winter sports region in the Caucasus some 50 km away is being developed. This entails building 6 rail and 3 road tunnels each with service tunnels with a total length of almost 30 km. Towards this end the T3 tunnel system embarked on at the beginning of 2009 embraces a 3,117 m long motorway tunnel and a 4,651 m long rail tunnel with a 5.8 km long service tunnel. The motorway tunnel was broken through on February 15, 2012 and the rail tunnel shortly prior to this. Five different tunnel boring machines were applied for the mechanised drive including a machine with 13.21 m diameter (S-534 Herrenknecht AG) for the motorway tunnel and one with 10.20/10.26 m diameter for the rail tunnel as well as one with 6.18/6.57 m diameter for the service tunnel. The altogether 13 km of tunnels and headings for the T3 tunnel system was completed in roughly one and a half years in spite of encountering numerous fault zones. Tunnel 5/2011, pp.18-28 Sweden Stockholm’s Söderstrom Tunnel broken through The Citybanan is a 6 km long, twin-track S-Bahn tunnel (over 500 trains/day) in the middle of Stockholm and provides the link between Tomteboda on the northern limits of the city with the suburb of Södermalm located in the south. This project was selected for the 2011 STUVA Prize on account of its innovative production method including the 3-part immersed tunnel between Södermalm and Riddarholmen devised as an underwater bridge. The underwater sections are founded on 4 pillars owing to the soft surface that forms the ocean bed. The immersed tunnel with 3 % incline beneath the Soderström, an arm of Lake Mälaren, transforms into a rock tunnel at both banks of the lake. The south rock tunnel was broken through in early January 2012. The 3 prefabricated twintrack tunnel segments totalling 300 m in length for the immersed tunnel/underwater bridge are to be lowered into place in summer 2013. The Citybanan is to become operational in 2017. G.B. Literatur / References [1] Spahn, T.; Lindholm, L.: Bau eines Absenktunnels im Herzen Stockholms/S.
