Utilities (natural gas, electricity, steam and wastewater
treatment) are more difficult to bring in-house. In 2002
arrangements were made to begin to purchase natural gas
directly from a broker. A new meter had to be installed and
the old service disconnected from SCI. This allowed Zeochem
to directly control the cost of the natural gas used and to even
out the financial impact. This program has been successful
in controlling and predicting costs.
In 2007 an opportunity developed for Zeochem to achieve significant
cost reduction by treating its own wastewater. An
investment proposal was approved by the CPH Board of
Directors. Because the addition of a wastewater treatment
system will add more electrical demand than the current
electrical system can handle, a new electrical supply was
required. The new electrical system was designed to be independent
and to replace the historic supply through SCI.
Work began on the wastewater treatment system and new
electrical system in January of 2008. The new electrical system
will go live on 15 April. The wastewater treatment system
will be on line in early July 2008.
With the startup of the new electrical service and wastewater
treatment service, the only remaining utility tied to SCI is
the steam supply. A new boiler and steam distribution system
are actively being considered. An investment proposal
is anticipated in the next one to two years. At that point
Zeochem L.L.C. will truly have utility freedom.
