Programme objective: To equip <strong>in</strong>tended beneficiaries <strong>of</strong> emergency <strong>food</strong> distribution<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>nutrition</strong> programmes <strong>with</strong> essential <strong>in</strong>formation about<br />
<strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> risk <strong>and</strong> prevention.<br />
Evidence from assessment<br />
that programme may be<br />
justified:<br />
Strategies: Strategies 1-4<br />
• Estimated <strong>HIV</strong> prevalence rates may be low but at risk<br />
<strong>of</strong> rapid rise (e.g., higher prevalence <strong>in</strong> host population,<br />
behavioural risk factors) <strong>and</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> knowledge about<br />
<strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> contributes to risk<br />
Programme objective: To build the capacity <strong>of</strong> <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> prevention <strong>and</strong> education<br />
volunteers, PLWHA groups <strong>and</strong> other valuable community<br />
resource persons to effectively undertake <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> prevention<br />
<strong>activities</strong> through the use <strong>of</strong> <strong>food</strong> <strong>and</strong>/or related resources.<br />

• M<strong>in</strong>imum <strong>food</strong> needs are already met; <strong>and</strong><br />
• Estimated <strong>HIV</strong> prevalence rates may be low but at risk<br />
<strong>of</strong> rapid rise (e.g., higher prevalence <strong>in</strong> host population,<br />
behavioural risk factors) <strong>and</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> knowledge about<br />
<strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> contributes to risk; <strong>and</strong><br />
• Community-<strong>support</strong>ed <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> prevention groups exist<br />
but need external <strong>support</strong> <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g/capacity build<strong>in</strong>g<br />
until local susta<strong>in</strong>able solutions are found; <strong>and</strong><br />
• Food is an appropriate resource to use for this external<br />
<strong>support</strong>
