Everyone <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> prevention efforts may require tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. As an added burden,<br />

<strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> underm<strong>in</strong>es the foundation <strong>of</strong> skills <strong>and</strong> human capacity, affect<strong>in</strong>g ma<strong>in</strong>ly the economically<br />

productive members <strong>of</strong> society. WFP recognizes the central role that <strong>food</strong> can play<br />

to “complement <strong>and</strong> scale up exist<strong>in</strong>g government, United Nations <strong>and</strong> NGO partner <strong>activities</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> prevention, mitigation <strong>and</strong> care for <strong>HIV</strong>-<strong>in</strong>fected <strong>and</strong> -affected <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>and</strong> families.” 30<br />

WFP is committed to the use <strong>of</strong> <strong>food</strong> resources for tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> capacity-build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>support</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>HIV</strong> prevention programmes.<br />

Food <strong>and</strong> related resources may be used to <strong>support</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> other capacity-build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>activities</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> two ma<strong>in</strong> ways:<br />

Strategy 17 Support for tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> other capacity-build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>activities</strong> for formal (cl<strong>in</strong>ic-based) <strong>and</strong> traditional<br />

(community-based) health care providers<br />

Strategy 18 Support for tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> other capacity-build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>activities</strong> for community resource persons who can<br />

play a vital role <strong>in</strong> <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> prevention efforts<br />

Food may be provided on-site for tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g participants dur<strong>in</strong>g short workshops. Longer-term<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes, particularly for heads <strong>of</strong> households, may call for the provision <strong>of</strong> a household<br />

ration to enable the participant to take part. Decisions about how much <strong>food</strong> to give, <strong>and</strong><br />

to whom, should take <strong>in</strong>to account resource availability, household access to other sources <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>food</strong>, <strong>and</strong> local factors.<br />
