Care <strong>and</strong> Support for <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong>-Affected People<br />

<strong>and</strong> Families<br />

To protect <strong>and</strong> promote the <strong>food</strong> security status <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong>-affected families, through <strong>food</strong> security<br />

<strong>in</strong>terventions such as garden<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> agriculture,<br />

<strong>in</strong>come-generat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>activities</strong>, microcredit, community<br />

bank<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> other <strong>activities</strong> requir<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g through<br />

the use <strong>of</strong> <strong>food</strong> <strong>and</strong>/or related resources.<br />

• Estimated <strong>HIV</strong> prevalence rates are high enough to<br />

warrant design<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> implement<strong>in</strong>g <strong>food</strong> security<br />

<strong>in</strong>terventions designed to take <strong>in</strong>to account<br />

the effects <strong>of</strong> <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong>; <strong>and</strong><br />

• <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong>-affected families are at elevated risk <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>food</strong> <strong>in</strong>security, <strong>and</strong> thus <strong>of</strong> worse health<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>nutrition</strong>al status; <strong>and</strong><br />

• Food security <strong>in</strong>terventions need external <strong>support</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g/capacity build<strong>in</strong>g until local susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />

solutions are found; <strong>and</strong><br />

• Food is an appropriate resource to use for<br />

this external <strong>support</strong><br />
