<strong>The</strong> Dragon, or Serpent, is amongst <strong>the</strong> oldest and most primal<br />

mythological symbols known to man. Most familiar to modern<br />

magicians and Gnostics as <strong>the</strong> Typhonian Current written about<br />

extensively by Kenneth Grant. Grant explains in Nightside <strong>of</strong> Eden,<br />

(t)he earliest Mystery tradition (i.e. <strong>the</strong> African) was dominated by<br />

three key symbols: <strong>the</strong> Tree, <strong>the</strong> Water and <strong>the</strong> Serpent … (and are<br />

found) in <strong>the</strong> metaphysics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kabbalah as <strong>the</strong> Tree <strong>of</strong> Life, <strong>the</strong><br />

Water <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Abyss</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Serpent which achieved it apo<strong>the</strong>osis or<br />

Height in <strong>the</strong> Depth to which <strong>the</strong> Gateway is Da’ath 96 .<br />

<strong>The</strong> symbolism is explained in more detail by showing <strong>the</strong> numerical<br />

(and thus <strong>the</strong> Kabalistic) formulae upon which <strong>the</strong>y are constructed<br />

and by which we can interpret <strong>the</strong>m: (<strong>the</strong> Hebrew letter Zain is)<br />

attributed to <strong>the</strong> Twins, Set-Horus,. Zain is <strong>the</strong> number seven, <strong>the</strong><br />

number <strong>of</strong> Sevekh, <strong>the</strong> earlier form <strong>of</strong> Set as <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mo<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

Typhon, one <strong>of</strong> whose symbols was <strong>the</strong> crocodile, <strong>the</strong> water-snake or<br />

<strong>the</strong> Dragon <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Deep. Like <strong>the</strong> progeny <strong>of</strong> Tiamat [note: <strong>the</strong><br />

Dragon-goddess <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ancient Babylonian myth-cycle <strong>of</strong> creation]<br />

Sevekh [Set] assumed his mo<strong>the</strong>rs totem, <strong>the</strong> crocodile. 97 (my<br />

emphasis)<br />

It is also <strong>of</strong> note, we have seen, that <strong>the</strong> Enochian magical system <strong>of</strong><br />

John Dee references <strong>the</strong> Demon Choronzon as <strong>the</strong> TELOCH-VOVIN,<br />

literally, <strong>the</strong> Death Dragon. <strong>The</strong> tangle <strong>of</strong> mythologies that have<br />

infected <strong>the</strong> Christianity <strong>of</strong> today make it difficult to render this<br />

properly without extensive background material. For our purposes, it<br />

will suffice to say that <strong>the</strong> Death Dragon is <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fspring or reborn<br />

aspect a most primordial being, known as <strong>the</strong> Leviathan in <strong>the</strong> Old<br />

<strong>Testa</strong>ment and conflated with Satan as <strong>the</strong> Great Red Dragon in<br />

Revelation. In <strong>the</strong> older myth streams referenced above, <strong>the</strong> Dragon-<br />

Serpent is pre-existent. Though <strong>the</strong>re is some tendency to conflate <strong>the</strong><br />

Demon with <strong>the</strong> Satan <strong>of</strong> Christian myth, this is not very useful as, in<br />

<strong>the</strong> end, we must realize that God has set <strong>the</strong> Death Dragon in his<br />

place and it is, it nothing else, vital for <strong>the</strong> magician or Gnostic to<br />

embrace <strong>the</strong> Universe as it is in order to <strong>the</strong>reby transcend it.<br />
