India. Activities include the preparation of abstracts, bibliographies, dictionaries, translations, histories of medicine, and critical reviews. Such publications as the Drug Digests, which makes available to U.S. researchers the most important foreign language papers in the field, are making a contribution to the U.S. scientific community far out of proportion to costs. Science Information Programs Science information programs conducted under section 104(k) are coordinated on behalf of 10 U.S. Government agencies by the National Science Foundation. The programs have developed markedly. U.S. Government scientists and the nongovernmental scientific community regard this addition to the normal science information services as a valuable aid in keeping abreast of the latest scientific developments in East European countries. The scope of the programs has been gradually expanded in these countries to include not only straight translation activities, but also support for the publication of English editions of their primary journals, cooperative programs with American abstracting and indexing services, preparation of critical review papers, compilation of bibliographies, translation of Ph. D. theses on a selected basis, and preparation of guides to foreign scientific institutions and information systems. The diversity of these programs is shown in table XXIV. In 1965, the National Science Foundation began exploring possibilities for the establishment of similar science information programs in other excess foreign currency countries, particularly India, Pakistan, and United Arab Republic. During 1965, the Foundation allocated the equivalent of $940,000 and an additional $781,000 was transferred from other agencies as shown in table XXIV. Smithsonian Program The Smithsonian Institution obtained for the first time in 1965 authority to use Public Law 480 excess currencies under section 104(k). The Institution was allocated $1.3 million support to American institutions of higher learning concerned with archeological excavation and research. The Department of State requested that the Smithsonian assume responsibility for this program because of its special competence in archeology. As of December 31, 1965, the Smithsonian had awarded grants totaling $861,181 equivalent in foreign currencies. These grants were awarded for American institutions' research in Guinea, India, Israel, Pakistan, and the United Arab Republic. The Smithsonian considers proposals for a wide variety of projects in archeology and related fields. Project proposals range from paleontological or stratigraphic investigations concerning the origins of man to studies in art history which have bearing on the social or cultural history of ancient civilizations. Proposals for the study of contemporary peoples are also considered wherever these can contribute to greater understanding of man's past. In keeping with the Smithsonian's tradition of support for neglected areas of research, this program seeks to use its grant resources for projects in those excess currency countries where little or no archeological investigation has been carried out by American institutions. Among the interesting research being carried out under this program are the recording of the hieroglyphics in the temple of the Pharaoh Ramnses III at Karnak, Egypt, the recovery of prehistoric materials from the area t b eflo o e y of pre hi gh m a nd the ra to be flooded by the Aswan high dam, and the x-raying of the second pyramid at Giza, Egypt, to discover secret chambers. Excavation in Israel includes the Philistine city of Ashdod.
