are largely deliberately choreographed staring encounters rather than the
spontaneous, unstructured ones that generally characterize our everyday
lives. Some are actually staged as performances or mediated through films
or narrative accounts. They provide an illustrative set of case studies that
magnify the dynamics and amplify the possibilities of staring. In doing so,
they necessarily highlight the potentially artful and productive roles starees
take in the interactive meaning-making of staring.
