and strength from what seems to be a f<strong>la</strong>w. He c<strong>la</strong>ims his own dignity and<br />

humanity as <strong>we</strong>ll by asserting, “I am proud to be part of the emerging culture<br />

of disability” and recounts stories that politely let starers know he is<br />

sexually active and attractive (D. Roche, “About David”; figure 8.2).<br />

Roche’s most incisive and detailed account of staring comes in a longer<br />

written piece called “Finding My Voice.” Here, Roche suggestively recounts<br />

his experience of undergoing what Michel Foucault (1975) calls<br />

“the clinical gaze”. Roche’s story begins in the medical waiting room, which<br />

collects people together as facially pathological. This diagnostic gathering<br />

sets everyone on edge by muting their individuality and highlighting their
