challenge is <strong>to</strong> develop and dissem<strong>in</strong>ate adequate cassava planters, harvesters, peelers,<br />

hydraulic presses, and dryers. Such mach<strong>in</strong>es will add value, remove drudgery <strong>in</strong> production<br />

and process<strong>in</strong>g, and make the cassava bus<strong>in</strong>ess more economically attractive. Cassava<br />

process<strong>in</strong>g is be<strong>in</strong>g promoted <strong>to</strong> enhance the stability of market prices, add value <strong>to</strong> primary<br />

production, and help farmers earn higher <strong>in</strong>come.<br />

and <strong>in</strong>crease export earn<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

To improve animal prote<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>take by 50% with<strong>in</strong> 3 years; <strong>to</strong><br />

Lives<strong>to</strong>ck produce for export with<strong>in</strong> the next 5 years; <strong>to</strong> expand the<br />

production development of dairy <strong>in</strong>dustry; <strong>to</strong> develop smallholder poultry<br />

1. expand primary process<strong>in</strong>g and utilization <strong>to</strong> absorb the national cassava production<br />

glut;<br />

2. identify and develop new market opportunities for import substitution and stimulate<br />

export;<br />

3. stimulate <strong>in</strong>creased private sec<strong>to</strong>r <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> the establishment of export-oriented<br />

cassava <strong>in</strong>dustries;<br />

4. ensure the availability of clean (disease free) plant<strong>in</strong>g materials targeted at the<br />

emerg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustries;<br />

5. advocate for conducive policy and <strong>in</strong>stitutional reforms for the development of the<br />

<strong>Nigeria</strong>n cassava sec<strong>to</strong>r and <strong>in</strong>tegrate the rural poor, especially women and youths,<br />

<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong>stream of the national economy.
