kg/ha (IFDC 2006).<br />
Two related issues are noteworthy with regard <strong>to</strong> improvement of fertilizer use and crop<br />
productivity <strong>in</strong> <strong>Nigeria</strong>. One, effective demand for fertilizers must be created. This requires<br />
conducive commodity prices, farm <strong>in</strong>come that is high enough <strong>to</strong> enable purchase of farm<br />
<strong>in</strong>puts, farmers’ improved knowledge of the use of fertilizers, rural <strong>in</strong>put credit programs <strong>to</strong><br />
enhance access <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>puts, and an efficient network for fertilizer trade. Also, traders, suppliers,<br />
and farmers must be efficiently l<strong>in</strong>ked. It is also important <strong>to</strong> encourage small-scale irrigation so<br />
that the risk associated with ra<strong>in</strong>fall is reduced and the profitability of <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> fertilizer<br />
adoption is <strong>in</strong>creased.<br />
A second condition for the improvement of crop productivity is <strong>to</strong> develop domestic capacity for<br />
fertilizer production. This becomes imperative s<strong>in</strong>ce virtually all of the fertilizer used <strong>in</strong> <strong>Nigeria</strong><br />
has been imported s<strong>in</strong>ce the early 2000s (Table 5). Thus, domestic sale prices are subject <strong>to</strong><br />
the vagaries of <strong>in</strong>ternational supply and demand, and have recently <strong>in</strong>creased dramatically due<br />
<strong>to</strong> ris<strong>in</strong>g energy prices.<br />
