(C. moschata) 100 days. An Italian Butternut-type squash, these<br />

have a violin shape and wrinkled tan skin. The flesh is deep orange<br />

and sweet, perfect for desserts, roasting, stuffing, and baking. Good<br />

(C. moschata) 100 days. An old favorite. Good yields with<br />

excellent-tasting, rich, orange-colored flesh. Great baked! Pkt<br />

CANADA CROOKNECK #SQ266 New!<br />

(C. moschata) 110 days. Old New England variety, preserved at Old<br />

Sturbridge Village, Massachusetts, where our foundation seed came<br />

from. Reportedly originated among the Iroquois Indians. Introduced<br />

1834 by Boston seedsman Charles H. Hovey, this ancestor of today’s<br />

Butternut was described in detail in Fearing Burr’s book of 1865. The<br />

bottle-shaped fruits reach 2-4 lbs, having a curved neck and finegrained,<br />

sweet flesh. Resistant to pests and diseases; a superlative<br />

keeper. Formerly quite common, it has become very difficult to find,<br />

and we are pleased to offer it. Pkt $3.00<br />

CANDY ROASTER—NORTH GEORGIA #SQ240<br />

(C. maxima) Here is a smaller strain of Candy Roaster from<br />

northern Georgia. This type of squash is famous among the<br />

people of the Southeast. Pink, banana-shaped fruit have a blue<br />

tip and weigh around 10 lbs. Delicious, smooth orange flesh is<br />

perfect baked, fried and makes great pies; hard to find and quite<br />

beautiful. Pkt $3.00<br />

CHICAGO WARTED HUBBARD #SQ127<br />

(C. maxima) 110 days. This heirloom was developed by Budlong<br />

Gardens of Chicago and was introduced by Vaughan’s Seed Store,<br />

of Chicago, in 1894. The 13-lb fruit are dusky-olive-green, deeply<br />

wrinkled, and warted, classic Hubbard shape. Fine-grained, sweet<br />

orange flesh. Pkt $2.00<br />

CHINESE MINIATURE WHITE #SQ264<br />

(C. pepo) Tiny 3”-4” flat white pumpkins are about the same size<br />

and shape as “Baby Boo.” Great for fall decorations and are also<br />

edible. A great squash for farm markets, easy to grow and gives<br />

excellent yields. From China. Pkt $2.50<br />

CHIRIMAN #SQ198<br />

(C. moschata) This Japanese heirloom was popular in the Edo<br />

period (1603-1867). It was first offered in the US by Aggelar and<br />

Musser Co., of Los Angeles, in 1922. Beautiful fruit weigh about 5<br />

lbs. This variety is flattened and ribbed, and deep greenish-black<br />

in color. They turn more tan in storage. The flesh is deep orange,<br />

sweet and flavorful. A great little squash that has become quite<br />

CONNECTICUT FIELD #SQ129<br />

(C. pepo) 100 days. The heirloom pumpkin of the New England<br />

settlers and Indians, several hundred years old. Golden fruit weigh<br />

about 20 lbs each. This is a truly old variety; can be used for pies; the<br />

traditional American pumpkin. Pkt $2.50 or 1/4lb $7.50<br />

CREAM OF THE CROP #SQ271 New!<br />

(C. pepo) 55 days. White bush-type acorn. The fruits are white and<br />

on the large side for an acorn, weighing in at 2-3 pounds. This<br />

variety is great picked small and used as summer squash, or let<br />

ripen and use for winter storage. This variety is perfect for small<br />

spaces and was grown in Jere’s childhood gardens. Pkt $2.50<br />

CROWN #SQ189<br />

(C. maxima) 95 days. Our friend, Mac Condill, found this great<br />

squash in Cape Town South Africa. Originally from Australia, this<br />

variety first came to the USA in the early 1930’s. Stunning, turbanshaped<br />

fruit are light blue in color and weigh about 12 lbs. The<br />

flesh is bright orange, sweet and of good quality, great for pies,<br />

baking and soups. Blue types can be traced back for more than<br />

150 years in Australia, and are among the best for eating. Pkt $2.75<br />

CUSHAW WHITE (JONATHAN PUMPKIN) #SQ116<br />

(C. mixta) 100 days. A rare Cushaw type; white skin and sweet, pale<br />

orange flesh. Easy to grow, huge yields, and good resistance to<br />

squash bugs. A popular heirloom from the South. (1891) Pkt $2.50<br />
