and White River) . These will be in addition to the Areas
currently in the program: E .E . Wilson, Ken Denman, Ladd
will be required for each vehicle on these Wildlife Areas .
SUmmER LAKE WA – Management programs on Summer
Lake Wildlife Area may impact hunting opportunities during
waterfowl hunting seasons . Efforts to rehabilitate portions
of the wetlands to provide long term habitat benefits to a
multitude of waterfowl and other waterbirds, have required
dewatering of certain areas and actively controlling
overgrown vegetation . Water was withdrawn from "Between
the Dikes" and Bullgate Refuge units this summer . Active
vegetation control occurs once wetlands are dry . While efforts
are underway to bring water back to all areas as soon as
possible some portions of the wildlife area may be dry and
not provide good hunting opportunities early in the season .
Between the Dikes will be held dry during the early part of
2012/13 hunting season with flooding anticipated in mid to
late October . The northern shore of Summer Lake proper
between the tips of Bullgate and Windbreak dikes will be
dry or at a very low water level as well . Hunters need to
be aware over-water and pond hunting opportunities will
be affected in this 2,000 acre area . This will not affect field
hunting opportunities .
In addition, construction activities may occur during the
early partof the hunting season in portions of Between the
Dikes Unit during October, 2012 .
To compensate for the diminished size of flooded hunting
areas, the northern portion of Bullgate Refuge (620 acres)
will remain open to hunting during the entire 2012/13
hunting season .
Beginning in October of the 2013/14 hunting season, the
northern portion of Bullgate Refuge currently open will
KLAMATH WA – Management programs on the Klamath
Wildlife Area-Miller Island Unit will impact waterfowl hunter
access during the 2012/13 waterfowl seasons . Efforts to
rehabilitate portions of the marshlands around the Miller
Island Unit, to improve long-term habitat benefits to a
multitude of waterfowl species will require dewatering
certain wetlands and actively controlling overgrown
vegetation . While efforts will be to bring water back to all
areas as soon as feasible, some portions of the unit may
be dry and will not provide good hunting opportunities
throughout the season .
Emergent vegetation on the larger Gorr Island may be
burned either late fall of 2012 or early winter of 2013 to
enhance green forage production for spring migrating geese .
About 120 acres in the southern portion of Subunit B, south
of the boat ramp, will be dry for the duration of the month
of October . Plans are to re-flood it in early November .
About 70 acres on the west side of Subunit A, north of the
Delameter parking area will be dry for the month of October .
Plans are to re-flood it in early November . Approximately
41 acres in the northern portion of Subunit C, on the west
side of the slough, will be dry for the month of October .
Plans are to re-flood it in early November . Over-water
hunting will be impacted in the portion of the hunt units
which have been dewatered . Field hunting activities will
not be impacted . The vast majority of the Miller Island Unit
will still provide adequate water habitats for attracting birds .
Maps showing impacted areas are available at the wildlife
area office or on the ODFW Web site, www .dfw .state .or .us .
Additional activities may occur in 2012/13 . Rehabilitated
marshes will provide important food sources for birds in
coming years and will greatly benefit hunters in the long
term . Phone: 541-883-5734 .
Caution: Wolves and hunting dogs
Encounters between wolves and hunting dogs are rare.
But wolves are by nature territorial and may act aggressively
toward any other dog species. Hunters that use dogs can take
steps to reduce the risk of conflict between dogs and wolves:
• Keep your dogs within view. Place a bell or beeping collar on wider ranging dogs.
• Talk loudly to the dog or other hunters.
• Use whistles or otherwise control your dog so that it stays close to you.
(You want wolves to associate the dog with a human.)
• If wolves are present or fresh wolf sign is observed, keep hunting dogs
close – this may require the use of a leash.
Wolves in Oregon are protected by law. It is unlawful to shoot a wolf in Oregon,
except in defense of human life or with a special permit.
