Occurrence in the Survey Area<br />

Presumed locally extinct. At JKCR, red-necked pademelon are<br />

only known from skeletal remains found at the sooty owl roost<br />

site in Nettle Cave (Morris et al. 1997). Remains were found in<br />

the surface layers and it is presumed that the red-necked<br />

pademelon has been lost from JKCR since European<br />

settlement. <strong>The</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> the red-necked pademelon from JKCR is<br />

in line with its disappearance from much <strong>of</strong> the southern part <strong>of</strong><br />

its former range in NSW. Recently, sightings <strong>of</strong> a small<br />

macropod fitting the description <strong>of</strong> a red-necked pademelon or<br />

similar have been noted near the head <strong>of</strong> Pheasant’s Nest<br />

Creek along the Five Mile and at Deburgh’s Bridge near the<br />

Grand Arch (Eddison 2008). This would be a highly significant<br />

discovery and requires confirmation. If this or any other small<br />

macropod was rediscovered at JKCR they would be <strong>of</strong> the<br />

highest conservation significance.<br />

Regional <strong>Conservation</strong> Significance<br />

Red-necked pademelon are believed to have become extinct in<br />

the region only in the last 20 years (DECC 2007). <strong>The</strong> last<br />

known location was on the Illawarra Escarpment. Currently, the<br />

nearest known location is the wet forests <strong>of</strong> the central and mid-<br />

north coasts <strong>of</strong> NSW and Barrington Tops. As the red-necked pademelon appears to be extinct in<br />

JKCR, this reserve does not contribute to the regional conservation <strong>of</strong> the species.<br />

Threats in the Survey Area<br />

Formerly – predation by feral cats, foxes and inappropriate fire regimes.<br />

Management Considerations<br />

No management required.<br />
