THE ANTAKYA SARCOPHAGUS<br />
The Antakya Sarcophagus (Fig. 25- 28) was found on February 25 th ,<br />
1993, south of the city centre of Antakya, ancient “Antiochia ad Orontes”. It was<br />
discovered on Harbiye Street (Kışlasaray District), lot no. 487, while the<br />
foundation for an apartment building was being dug. <strong>To</strong>day, the location has a<br />
tall green apartment building on it, opposite the J<strong>and</strong>arma barracks (Fig. 33), the<br />
exact address being 2. Ulus Street, Huri Apt. No: 8. The sarcophagus <strong>and</strong> its<br />
contents were excavated by the Hatay Museum archaeologists, <strong>and</strong> are now<br />
exhibited in the Museum in a special room designed for them.<br />
The excavators, failing to keep any records <strong>and</strong> take any photographs,<br />
cannot provide any further information about the situation of the sarcophagus in<br />
its findspot, <strong>and</strong> the position of the lid; which direction it was found on the chest.<br />
However, the unfinished nature of the long side with the hunt scene suggests that<br />
this side was intended to be the rear, <strong>and</strong> the other long side with the seated <strong>and</strong><br />
st<strong>and</strong>ing figures, the front side. Thus the placement of the sarcophagus in<br />
exhibition in the museum today is probably correct.<br />
The area where the sarcophagus was found suggests the possibility of an<br />
ancient necropolis there, <strong>and</strong> another sarcophagus of plain stone in the garden of<br />
