corner (Fig. 66) has slimmer proportions that the one on the left corner (Fig. 67)<br />

<strong>and</strong> his horns are carved in more detail, whereas the horns of the one on the left<br />

are only indicated by slight incisions.<br />

Placing human faces on the acroteria of the lids is a feature of the<br />

sarcophagi with straight lids produced at Rome (Koch, 2001: 28). One example<br />

with the human faces on the acroteria of the lid is the sarcophagus from Via<br />

Amendola, dated to c.AD 170, now in Museo Capitolino, Rome (Fig. 68)<br />

(Kleiner, 1992: 258).<br />

4.5 Figured Decoration<br />

The figures on the chest <strong>and</strong> the lid of the Antakya Sarcophagus are<br />

described below starting from the leftmost figure on the front side <strong>and</strong> continuing<br />

in counter-clockwise direction. A letter is given to each figure by the author of<br />

this thesis for an easy reference.<br />

4.5.1 Front Side<br />

The front side is a composition of five figures; 2 seated figures at each end<br />

framing 3 st<strong>and</strong>ing figures.<br />

folding stool (Robsjohn-Gibbings <strong>and</strong> Pullin, 1963: 69; Richter, 1966: 103-104)<br />

whose legs terminate in the shape of animal hoofs. The left side legs of the stool<br />

are shown in very low relief behind the right side legs. The column at the back of<br />

Figure A has been roughed out behind the stool. The body of Figure A is shown<br />

frontally, while her head <strong>and</strong> legs are in profile. The left h<strong>and</strong> is within the fold of<br />

the himation <strong>and</strong> rests along the body at the level of the abdomen. The left h<strong>and</strong><br />
