Nine short grain aromatic semidwarf cultures showed commendable performance <strong>of</strong> the 22<br />

tested for yield across 25 locations and are promoted to IVT-ASG. <strong>All</strong> have aroma and good quality<br />

features. The top entries to name a few include IET 21850 (CN 1268-5-7), IET 21842 (R 1536-136-1-<br />

77-1), IET 21839 (MGD 109) etc. IET 21850 has moderate resistance to stem borer while IET 21842<br />

has resistance to GMB4 and moderate resistance to stem borer.<br />

SALINE AND ALKALINE TRIALS<br />

<strong>Rice</strong> crop is <strong>of</strong>ten exposed to salt stress such as salinity both inland and coastal and alkalinity limiting<br />

rice production. Soil heterogeneity, environmental influence, the complexity <strong>of</strong> salt tolerance mechanisms has a<br />

direct influence on breeding efforts to these stresses. Therefore in order to identify high yielding varieties<br />

insulated with salt tolerance, Alkaline and Inland Saline Tolerant Variety Trial (AL&ISTVT) and National<br />

Saline and Alkaline Screening Nursery (NSASN) are constituted with 67 entries and screened at 23 relevant<br />

centres.<br />

IET 20341 (CR 661-236-1-3) surpassed the best check CSR 23 and found promising for inland<br />

salinity on overall basis. It has long bold grains and good quality components. None <strong>of</strong> the entries was<br />

superior to the best check CSR 36 in alkaline conditions.<br />
