RAINFED UPLAND TRIALS<br />

The production and productivity <strong>of</strong> rice in rainfed upland spread over central, sourthern and<br />

eastern region <strong>of</strong> country is low (around 0.7 to 1.5 t/ha). The productivity <strong>of</strong> this ecology is<br />

hampered due to erratic and less rain fall during crop growth period, low soil fertility, heavy<br />

infestation <strong>of</strong> weeds, pest and disease like blast, brown spot, root not nematode, leaf folder, BPH,<br />

etc. To improve the productivity <strong>of</strong> this ecology, the concerted efforts to develop suitable varieties<br />

having drought tolerance along with several major pest and disease resistance are needed.<br />

Considering the limitations one <strong>of</strong> the major objectives <strong>of</strong> the AICRIP programme is to identify a<br />

suitable culture with biotic and abiotic tolerance <strong>of</strong> very early and early duration, a total <strong>of</strong> 25<br />

entries in very early (6 in AVT and 19 in IVT) and 26 entries in early (8 in AVT and 18 in IVT)<br />

group were evaluated in 21 experiments <strong>of</strong> VE and 24 trials in duration at different locations<br />

covering the states <strong>of</strong> UP, MP, JH, CH, OR, WB, MA, GU, TN and KA in regions 3, 4 and 5 under<br />

rainfed direct seeded conditions. The major findings are discussed trialwise as below:<br />

The trial was constituted with 6 test entries and three checks - national (Anjali), regional;<br />

Vandana (Eastern) and Varalu (Western and Southern) and local. Of the 6 test entries three were in<br />

3 rd year <strong>of</strong> testing and the other 3 entries were promoted from IVT-VE-DS. The trial was evaluated<br />

under direct seeded rainfed conditions at 9 locations, while at Jabalpur trial was evaluated under<br />

irrigated transplanted condition. Hence, the data from Jabalpur, was not considered in analyzing the<br />

performance <strong>of</strong> entries. The trial was evaluated at Bhubaneshwar, Hazaribagh, Ranchi, Rewa,<br />

Jagdalpur, Tuljapur,Vyara, Derol, Paramakudi and Jabalpur, covering region 3, 4 and 5. The<br />

drought was experienced at Bhubaneshwar, Hazaribagh and Paramakudi at different crop growth<br />

stages. While at other locations normal rainfall was received during crop growth stages. The<br />

information on rainfall, drought spell, number <strong>of</strong> days <strong>of</strong> drought, experimental mean yield, range,<br />

highest yielding checks are presented below:<br />
