DRR Annual Progress Report 2010, Vol.1 – Varietal Improvement
Performance of entries under drought stress
Drought at different crop growth stages was experienced at Hazaribagh, Rewa, Raipur,
Ambikapur, Paramakudi and Mugad. At Ambikapur severe drought at tillering and grain filling
stages resulted in drastic yield reduction so much so that some of the entries could not even yield.
The experimental mean yield of the entries ranged from 451 kg/ha (Ambikapur) to 2676 kg/ha
(Mugad). The difference between yield of the entries at Mugad was non-significant. The C.V. of
the experiment ranged from 14.2% at Paramakudi to 51.5% at Rewa (Table 1.17). The overall mean
yield of the entries ranged from 1262 kg/ha (IET 21076) to 2340 kg/ha (IET 21638). State and
region yield data are given in Tables 1.18 and 1.19. Data on days to 50% flowering, panicle/m 2 and
plant height are presented in Tables 1.20, 1.21 and 1.22 respectively. While the 50% flowering
duration of the entries ranged from 76 days (IET 21638) to 95 days (IET 21633). The performance
of the entries for drought tolerance screened under rainout shelter at Hazaribagh are given below.
Among the entries IET 21627 and Annada recorded as tolerant entries with score of 3 in 0-9
scale under rain out shelter, while IET 21089 and Narendra 97 rated as moderately tolerant with
score of 5.
The entry IET 21638 (TJP 48) derived from the cross Terna/TJP 28 ranked 1 st with yield of
2340 kg/ha, 76 days of 50% flowering duration and long slender grains. On overall mean it yielded
54.15%, 41.56% and 38.05% higher than the national, regional and local checks, respectively. It
showed significantly higher yield than all the checks at Hazaribagh (2988 kg/ha, 1 st ) and Rewa
(3446 kg/ha, 1 st ). In region 3, it ranked 1 st with 94.74% higher than the highest yielding check.
While in the states of Jharkhand (1 st ), MP (1 st ) and Chhattisgarh (2 nd ), it yielded 91.66%, 46.20%
and 26.1% higher than the best check. Qualitywise, it has high head rice recovery (69.5%),
intermediate ASV (4.0) and AC (24.21%) (Table 1.23).
