The BFAR <strong>Fisheries</strong> Scholarship Program<br />

(Fsp)<br />

The BFAR <strong>Fisheries</strong> Scholarship Program<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers undergraduate scholarships to<br />

deserving students (<strong>Fisheries</strong> Scholarship<br />

Progam) <strong>and</strong> also to children <strong>of</strong> small-scale<br />

fisherfolk (Fisherfolk Children Educational<br />

Grant) who are interested to pursue a fouryear<br />

BS <strong>Fisheries</strong> course.<br />

The FSP is open to High School students<br />

<strong>and</strong> graduates who belong to the top ten <strong>of</strong><br />

their class. While the FCEG is open to high<br />

school graduate who is a son or daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

a bonafide small-scale fisherfolk. (for details<br />

For 2011, the agency maintained <strong>and</strong><br />

monitored academic performance <strong>of</strong> three<br />

BFAR Scholars at Cagayan State University<br />

Management <strong>and</strong> Operation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Regional Research, Development <strong>and</strong><br />

Extension (RDE) Network <strong>of</strong> BFAR-<br />

RFRDC 02 for CY 2011.<br />

Highlights <strong>of</strong> Accomplishments:<br />

A. Conducted Research Proposal review <strong>and</strong><br />

evaluation<br />

The BFAR-RFRDC 02 initiated the evaluation<br />

<strong>of</strong> research proposals on February 21 – 22, 2011<br />

prior to implementation for CY 2011.<br />

Experts from the fisheries sector <strong>and</strong> academe<br />

were invited as evaluators to include Dr. Esterlita<br />

Calanoga, Dr. Eunice Layugan, <strong>and</strong> Ms. Perla<br />

A. Visorro. Likewise, BFAR Reg.02 Assistant<br />

Regional Director Severina Bueno <strong>and</strong> Chief <strong>of</strong><br />

Research Division Dr. Evelyn C. Ame assisted<br />

in the evaluation. A total <strong>of</strong> 18 studies were<br />

presented by staff <strong>of</strong> BFAR Reg. 02 at the MIS<br />

Hall, BFAR R02.<br />

B. Conducted Meetings with the Network<br />

members<br />

One meeting was held on October 28, 2011 at<br />

BFAR R02, Conference Hall, Carig, Tuguegarao<br />

City following R & D In-House Review, the<br />

Regional Integrated Research Development <strong>and</strong><br />

Extension Agenda Program (RIRDEAP) <strong>of</strong> Region<br />

02 was validated <strong>and</strong> updated, among other<br />

research concerns.<br />

C. Conducted Refresher Course on Statistical<br />

Analysis<br />

The refresher course was conducted on<br />

September 21 – 22, 2011 at BFAR R02 Malcolm<br />

Hall, Tuguegarao City <strong>and</strong> was participated<br />

by technical staff from Extension <strong>and</strong> Research<br />

Division, Commodity leaders, PFAO’s, <strong>and</strong> BFAR<br />

Stations, as measure to enhance the processing<br />

<strong>and</strong> interpretation <strong>of</strong> data being derived from<br />

various research <strong>and</strong> demo projects.<br />

D. Conducted R & D In-House Review <strong>and</strong><br />

Evaluation Workshop<br />

The in-house review <strong>and</strong> evaluation workshop<br />

was conducted on October 27-28, 2011 at MIS Hall,<br />

BFAR R02. There were 15 researches presented, <strong>of</strong><br />

which 3 were from CSU-A, 1 from ISU-Roxas <strong>and</strong><br />

11 were from BFAR. The winning papers were the<br />

following:<br />

1st Best Research Paper<br />

• “Status <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fisheries</strong> <strong>Resources</strong> at the<br />

Babuyan Channel” - Ms. Maureen A. Aragon, Dr.<br />

Evelyn C. Ame, Mr. Venchito Villarao, Dr. Jovita P.<br />

Ayson (BFAR R02)<br />

This paper discussed results <strong>of</strong> the marine<br />

fisheries stock assessment conducted from 1999<br />

– 2010 in ten l<strong>and</strong>ing centers covering Babuyan<br />

Channel with the objective <strong>of</strong> determining fishing<br />

ground’s status as basis for the sustainable<br />

management <strong>and</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> its marine<br />

resources.<br />

2nd Best Research Paper<br />

• “Seedbank Development: Preliminary Trial<br />

on Induced Spawning <strong>of</strong> Batissa violacea<br />

Using Different Levels <strong>of</strong> Serotonin” – Dr.<br />

Eunice Layugan (CSU Aparri)<br />

The paper discussed the induced spawning<br />

<strong>of</strong> Batissa violacea using different levels <strong>of</strong><br />

serotonin that was studied from December 19,<br />

2010 to January 28, 2011. Specifically, it aimed<br />

to determine the optimum levels <strong>of</strong> serotonin<br />

in inducing Batissa violacea to spawn, monitor<br />

stages <strong>of</strong> egg development percentage survival <strong>of</strong><br />

B. violacea breeders injected with serotonin. The<br />

study is an attempt to establish breeding technique<br />

to be able to produce seeds for stock enhancement<br />

purposes. Batissa violacea is the scientific name <strong>of</strong> a<br />

popular shellfish locally known as cabibi.<br />
