The BFAR Fisheries Scholarship Program
(Fsp)
The BFAR Fisheries Scholarship Program
offers undergraduate scholarships to
deserving students (Fisheries Scholarship
Progam) and also to children of small-scale
fisherfolk (Fisherfolk Children Educational
Grant) who are interested to pursue a fouryear
BS Fisheries course.
The FSP is open to High School students
and graduates who belong to the top ten of
their class. While the FCEG is open to high
school graduate who is a son or daughter of
a bonafide small-scale fisherfolk. (for details

For 2011, the agency maintained and
monitored academic performance of three
BFAR Scholars at Cagayan State University
Aparri, Cagayan. The students are:

Management and Operation of the
Regional Research, Development and
Extension (RDE) Network of BFAR-
RFRDC 02 for CY 2011.
Highlights of Accomplishments:
A. Conducted Research Proposal review and
evaluation
The BFAR-RFRDC 02 initiated the evaluation
of research proposals on February 21 – 22, 2011
prior to implementation for CY 2011.
Experts from the fisheries sector and academe
were invited as evaluators to include Dr. Esterlita
Calanoga, Dr. Eunice Layugan, and Ms. Perla
A. Visorro. Likewise, BFAR Reg.02 Assistant
Regional Director Severina Bueno and Chief of
Research Division Dr. Evelyn C. Ame assisted
in the evaluation. A total of 18 studies were
presented by staff of BFAR Reg. 02 at the MIS
Hall, BFAR R02.
B. Conducted Meetings with the Network
members
One meeting was held on October 28, 2011 at
BFAR R02, Conference Hall, Carig, Tuguegarao
City following R & D In-House Review, the
Regional Integrated Research Development and
Extension Agenda Program (RIRDEAP) of Region
02 was validated and updated, among other
research concerns.
C. Conducted Refresher Course on Statistical
Analysis
The refresher course was conducted on
September 21 – 22, 2011 at BFAR R02 Malcolm
Hall, Tuguegarao City and was participated
by technical staff from Extension and Research
Division, Commodity leaders, PFAO’s, and BFAR
Stations, as measure to enhance the processing
and interpretation of data being derived from
various research and demo projects.
D. Conducted R & D In-House Review and
Evaluation Workshop
The in-house review and evaluation workshop
was conducted on October 27-28, 2011 at MIS Hall,
BFAR R02. There were 15 researches presented, of
which 3 were from CSU-A, 1 from ISU-Roxas and
11 were from BFAR. The winning papers were the
following:
1st Best Research Paper
• “Status of Fisheries Resources at the
Babuyan Channel” - Ms. Maureen A. Aragon, Dr.
Evelyn C. Ame, Mr. Venchito Villarao, Dr. Jovita P.
Ayson (BFAR R02)
This paper discussed results of the marine
fisheries stock assessment conducted from 1999
– 2010 in ten landing centers covering Babuyan
Channel with the objective of determining fishing
ground’s status as basis for the sustainable
management and conservation of its marine
resources.
2nd Best Research Paper
• “Seedbank Development: Preliminary Trial
on Induced Spawning of Batissa violacea
Using Different Levels of Serotonin” – Dr.
Eunice Layugan (CSU Aparri)
The paper discussed the induced spawning
of Batissa violacea using different levels of
serotonin that was studied from December 19,
2010 to January 28, 2011. Specifically, it aimed
to determine the optimum levels of serotonin
in inducing Batissa violacea to spawn, monitor
stages of egg development percentage survival of
B. violacea breeders injected with serotonin. The
study is an attempt to establish breeding technique
to be able to produce seeds for stock enhancement
purposes. Batissa violacea is the scientific name of a
popular shellfish locally known as cabibi.
