Annual Technology Caravan<br />

Personnel <strong>of</strong> BFAR RO2 <strong>and</strong> the Regional<br />

<strong>Fisheries</strong> Training Center visited the province <strong>of</strong><br />

Batanes last March 28 to April 4, 2011, in line with<br />

the annual technology caravan <strong>of</strong> the agency.<br />

Conducted were trainings on Package <strong>of</strong><br />

Technology (POT) for Fishery Implementors;<br />

Design, Construction, Operation <strong>and</strong> Maintenance<br />

<strong>of</strong> Fishing Gears; Skills Training on H<strong>and</strong>ling,<br />

Processing <strong>and</strong> Packaging/Labeling <strong>of</strong> Fishery<br />

Products; Shellcraft; <strong>and</strong> Deputy Fish Warden<br />

Course.<br />

The POT was attended by fi shery technicians<br />

from the provincial <strong>and</strong> municipal governments<br />

<strong>and</strong> dealt mainly on the salient provisions <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Philippine <strong>Fisheries</strong> Code (RA 8550), integrated<br />

coastal resource management, municipal fi shing<br />

technologies <strong>and</strong> various aquaculture technologies<br />

such as ulang <strong>and</strong> tilapia grow-out, tilapia hatchery<br />

operation, use <strong>of</strong> duckweeds as supplemental fi sh<br />

feeds <strong>and</strong> organic aquaculture.<br />

The fi shing gear design <strong>and</strong> construction on the<br />

other h<strong>and</strong>, was attended by around 30 fi sherfolk<br />

coming from various towns <strong>of</strong> the province.<br />

The training tackled topics on the design <strong>and</strong><br />

construction <strong>of</strong> environment-friendly fi shing gears<br />

mainly multiple h<strong>and</strong>line, hook <strong>and</strong> line <strong>and</strong> drift<br />

gill net.<br />

After the training, the bureau awarded 90 units<br />

<strong>of</strong> said fi shing gears as livelihood assistance to the<br />

fi sherfolk.<br />

Fish processing experts likewise, rendered skills<br />

training on h<strong>and</strong>ling, processing <strong>and</strong> packaging <strong>of</strong><br />

fi shery products. This was attended by the newly<br />

organized fi sh processors association in Mahatao<br />

town. The training focused on the preparation<br />

<strong>of</strong> bottled fi sh <strong>and</strong> tocino with fl ying fi sh as raw<br />

BFAR<br />

material.<br />

The last training conducted was a deputy fi sh<br />

warden course attended by around 20 barangay<br />

<strong>of</strong>fi cials <strong>and</strong> Sanggunian Bayan members. The<br />

trainees were oriented on the salient provisions <strong>of</strong><br />

RA 8550.<br />
