Annual Technology Caravan
Personnel of BFAR RO2 and the Regional
Fisheries Training Center visited the province of
Batanes last March 28 to April 4, 2011, in line with
the annual technology caravan of the agency.
Conducted were trainings on Package of
Technology (POT) for Fishery Implementors;
Design, Construction, Operation and Maintenance
of Fishing Gears; Skills Training on Handling,
Processing and Packaging/Labeling of Fishery
Products; Shellcraft; and Deputy Fish Warden
Course.
The POT was attended by fi shery technicians
from the provincial and municipal governments
and dealt mainly on the salient provisions of the
Philippine Fisheries Code (RA 8550), integrated
coastal resource management, municipal fi shing
technologies and various aquaculture technologies
such as ulang and tilapia grow-out, tilapia hatchery
operation, use of duckweeds as supplemental fi sh
feeds and organic aquaculture.
The fi shing gear design and construction on the
other hand, was attended by around 30 fi sherfolk
coming from various towns of the province.
The training tackled topics on the design and
construction of environment-friendly fi shing gears
mainly multiple handline, hook and line and drift
gill net.
After the training, the bureau awarded 90 units
of said fi shing gears as livelihood assistance to the
fi sherfolk.
Fish processing experts likewise, rendered skills
training on handling, processing and packaging of
fi shery products. This was attended by the newly
organized fi sh processors association in Mahatao
town. The training focused on the preparation
of bottled fi sh and tocino with fl ying fi sh as raw
BFAR
material.
The last training conducted was a deputy fi sh
warden course attended by around 20 barangay
offi cials and Sanggunian Bayan members. The
trainees were oriented on the salient provisions of
RA 8550.
