BFAR Region 02 vi I BFAR express my profuse gratitude and heartfelt commendation to the entire BFAR RO2 family – from our contractuals to our regular personnel, offi cers and consultants, for the hard work and dedication, enabling us to once again fulfi ll our mandate and render the service expected of us. I would also like to thank our LGU, NGA, media, NGO and PO partners for helping us perform our common objectives. After a downturn experienced last year, region 02’s annual fi sheries production rebounded this year with 4.05% growth year-on-year. CY 2011 fi sheries production stands at 64,878 metric tons with suffi ciency level at 54%. The growth is attributed to the good weather condition, and is also due to several interventions like the establishment of technology demonstration projects and dissemination of updated and industry-responsive technologies that were produced thru the various researches held by the agency, installation of payaos or fi sh aggregating devices, dispersal fi ngerlings to communal bodies of water, and distribution of fi shing gears to marginalized fi shermen, among other technical interventions. During the year, we also continued works on one of our fl agship projects which is the mariculture park in Sta. Ana - the fi rst ever mariculture park in region 02. Further studies and administrative work are needed before we can open up the site for commercialization. Likewise, we also continued various work on the Oplan Sagip Ludong project. Thru the OSL, we aim to revive the wild population and bring back abundance of Ludong – the most expensive food fi sh in the country. For the coming year, we shall continue with our current activities, with focus on the introduction of technologies that can help our fi sh farmers and fi shermen cut on cost and at the same time protect the environment. The bureau overshot its goal on tilapia fi ngerlings – the top species being produced and dispersed by the offi ce, by almost 15%. Production and dispersal for the other species likewise increased (Table 1). The above production, which came from BFAR RO2 fi sh farms, were distributed to 93 municipalities, 3 city governments, 5 provinces, 2,230 fi sh farmers including backyard fi shpond operators; dispersed to communal bodies of water such as small water impounding projects (SWIPs) small farm reservoirs (SFRs); and allocated as stock for techno-demos, KALAHI projects and as rehabilitation assistance for calamity – stricken fi sherfolk. Technology Center, Muñoz, Nueva Ecija augmented the regional production by providing 9.153 M improved-GET EXCEL, 0.062 M common carp, and ornamental fi shes. The offi ce likewise purchased African hito fi ngerlings, P. vannamei post larvae from private suppliers, for its various projects. All these seed inputs were provided by the agency to recipient, free of charge. Modes of allocation or distribution were either under the regular dispersal program of the agency, as typhoon or calamity rehabilitation assistance, or inputs for demos. The fi rst two modes are coursed thru the LGU, who then determine the fi nal recipients. In addition, walk-in clients (backyard operators) are given free fi ngerlings outright with maximum of 1,000 pieces per recipient.
