RO2<br />

The Region 02 Chapter <strong>of</strong> the Philippine Marine<br />

Found near death, a team <strong>of</strong> veterinarians led by Dr. Earnst<br />

Duque <strong>of</strong> the DA RFU2 <strong>and</strong> wife Lillian, were able to revive<br />

“Charlie” back to a condition where it can control its own<br />

body. The team were planning to release the animal back to<br />

the wild, regrettably, it perished early morning<strong>of</strong> August 26.<br />

Mammal Str<strong>and</strong>ing Network, had a busy year as it<br />

responded to three str<strong>and</strong>ing incidents involving 3<br />

dolphins.<br />

The fi rst incident was a heart-rending experience<br />

as Network members led by Dr. Earnst Duque <strong>of</strong> the<br />

DA – RFU2 tried to revive a 2.3-meter male Frasers<br />

dolphin found near-death along the beach <strong>of</strong> Brgy.<br />

Taggat in Claveria, Cagayan. The rescue team members<br />

tried their very best to revive the dolphin (whom<br />

they named as Charlie) <strong>and</strong> were about to achieve<br />

success after more than a week <strong>of</strong> intensive care, sadly<br />

perished a couple <strong>of</strong> days before its scheduled release.<br />

Although not successful, the rescue effort <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

a wealth <strong>of</strong> experience <strong>and</strong> knowledge, that the team<br />

Region 02 was visited by three typhoons in<br />

2011, namely: ‘Mina’, ‘Pedring’ <strong>and</strong> ‘Quiel’.<br />

The typhoons devastated various fi shery<br />

projects, both in aquaculture <strong>and</strong> capture<br />

fi sheries, in the fi ve provinces <strong>of</strong> region 02.<br />

Total damages amounted Php 44.9 million.<br />

As intervention, BFAR RO2 prepared <strong>and</strong><br />

submitted rehabilitation plan worth Php<br />

3,210,414.00, outlining the provision <strong>of</strong> tilapia<br />

<strong>and</strong> bangus fi ngerlings as assistance to fi sh<br />

farmers <strong>and</strong> various types <strong>of</strong> fi shing gears<br />

<strong>and</strong> bancas (motorized <strong>and</strong> non-motorized)<br />

for capture fi shermen.<br />

<strong>and</strong> also apply in future str<strong>and</strong>ing incidents in region<br />

02.<br />

The second incident involved a Dwarf Sperm<br />

Whale found beached again at Taggat, Claveria.<br />

The last incident was at Casambalangan, Sta. Ana<br />

involving a Rough-toothed dolphin 2.15 meters in<br />

length. The rescue team tried to save the dolphin but<br />

unsuccessful.<br />

The BFAR RO2 led PMMSN -02 also embarked<br />

on an Educational Trip to Ocean Adventure, Subic,<br />

Zambales last Nov. 16-19, 2011. About 90 participants<br />

who came from BFAR RO2, media, PNP Maritime,<br />

government <strong>and</strong> private veterinarians attended the<br />

activity.<br />

Fishing bancas set for distribution in Maconacon, Isabela<br />

as part <strong>of</strong> the disaster rehabilitation eff ort <strong>of</strong> BFAR RO2.<br />
