The functional excellence of this facility was reflected in <strong>the</strong> setting of 14 new world records <strong>and</strong> 37 new<br />
Olympic records during <strong>the</strong> Games.<br />
Sydney Athletic Centre<br />
The Athletic Centre was designed to integrate with Stadium Australia during <strong>the</strong> Games, with dual tracks<br />
serving as <strong>the</strong> warm up facility <strong>and</strong> training venue. It comprises a principal running track <strong>and</strong> a nearby<br />
training ground both accompanied by metal <strong>and</strong> glass pavilions incorporating spectator seating, athletes’<br />
facilities <strong>and</strong> offices. The gr<strong>and</strong>st<strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> main competition arena seats 5,000 spectators <strong>and</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
10,000 can be accommodated using temporary seating on <strong>the</strong> grass banks.<br />
State Hockey Centre<br />
The State Hockey Centre is now one of <strong>the</strong> world’s top hockey venues. More than 30,000 people play<br />
hockey in NSW alone, while <strong>the</strong> total number of people associated with <strong>the</strong> game in some form in <strong>the</strong> State<br />
is estimated at more than 100,000.<br />
The sport’s peak body in <strong>the</strong> State, Hockey New South Wales, is based in <strong>the</strong> State Hockey Centre<br />
gr<strong>and</strong>st<strong>and</strong> area.<br />
The Centre consists of two syn<strong>the</strong>tic pitches, one for competition <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r for warm-ups. It provides a<br />
training <strong>and</strong> competition venue for players of all levels, from school teams to international representatives.<br />
The gr<strong>and</strong>st<strong>and</strong> has seating for more than 1,500 people.<br />
Accessible features include a lift, fully accessible toilets, wheelchair seating locations with good sightlines,<br />
hearing augmentation, tactile floor tiles <strong>and</strong> gently graded paths from public transport terminals to<br />
concourse level.<br />
State <strong>Sports</strong> Centre<br />
The State <strong>Sports</strong> Centre is a versatile venue catering for functions, exhibitions <strong>and</strong> entertainment events<br />
as well as a variety of sports. The Centre also gives visitors a glimpse into Australia’s rich sporting history.<br />
Since its opening in 1984 <strong>the</strong> Centre has hosted virtually every type of indoor event imaginable, from<br />
Sydney’s first big-league basketball matches to conferences, dinners, rock concerts <strong>and</strong> even a State<br />
election tally-room.<br />
The Centre’s main arena has seating for more than 4,500 people, but <strong>the</strong> performance area can be<br />
reduced to cater for more intimate events. A training centre provides 1,000 square metres of floor space<br />
for functions, seminars, <strong>and</strong> trade shows.<br />
The Centre has a licensed bar, coffee shop <strong>and</strong> an in-house catering service that can h<strong>and</strong>le functions for<br />
up to 1,500 people.<br />
The New South Wales Hall of Champions, located inside <strong>the</strong> State <strong>Sports</strong> Centre, is <strong>the</strong> State’s premier<br />
sporting hall of fame <strong>and</strong> sports museum. Established in 1979, <strong>the</strong> Hall of Champions recognises<br />
outst<strong>and</strong>ing achievements by NSW athletes, many of whom are counted among <strong>the</strong> nation’s finest.<br />
Famous names, great moments <strong>and</strong> inspired performances are celebrated in <strong>the</strong> Hall.<br />
The Centre received a major upgrade for <strong>the</strong> Sydney <strong>2000</strong> Games, modernising <strong>the</strong> facilities <strong>and</strong> bringing<br />
<strong>the</strong>m up to international st<strong>and</strong>ard for indoor events.<br />
