PART FIVE : THE SYDNEY <strong>2000</strong> LEGACY<br />
OCA - Planning, Co-ordination <strong>and</strong> Operations<br />
Invaluable experience gained from all OCA programs will assist with preparation for future<br />
major events. The development <strong>and</strong> promotion of transport infrastructure has established public transport<br />
as a critical support to major events at SOP.<br />
Transport<br />
• NSW's public transport system has proven its ability to provide a world class service. The people of<br />
Sydney have accepted public transport as an efficient <strong>and</strong> viable travel option to access major events.<br />
• Knowledge gained from <strong>the</strong> Olympic Transport experience can be applied to future major events<br />
across NSW as well as daily travel.<br />
• The Games demonstrated <strong>the</strong> benefit of strong links between event organisers <strong>and</strong> transport planning.<br />
• The Games resulted in an unprecedented level of co-ordination <strong>and</strong> integration across <strong>the</strong> State's<br />
transport agencies <strong>and</strong> modes, including co-ordinated planning, integrated ticketing, transport services<br />
<strong>and</strong> improved communications with <strong>the</strong> public. The Department of Transport is working to build on <strong>the</strong><br />
success of <strong>the</strong> Games.<br />
• The Games also resulted in improved relations between staff, unions <strong>and</strong> management through<br />
unprecedented levels of co-operation, <strong>and</strong> improved customer service <strong>and</strong> community<br />
communications through <strong>the</strong> provision of real time train information.<br />
• Public transport in now firmly established as <strong>the</strong> primary means to travel to Homebush Bay for major<br />
events. This will greatly assist <strong>the</strong> long term viability of Sydney Olympic Park.<br />
• Supporting infrastructure programs undertaken by SRA <strong>and</strong> RTA, such as station upgrades <strong>and</strong> road<br />
improvements will provide public amenity for many years to come.<br />
Security<br />
• Capital purchases included communications equipment enhancements, water police vessels <strong>and</strong><br />
o<strong>the</strong>r specialist police equipment, which will continue to be used well beyond <strong>the</strong> period of <strong>the</strong> Games.<br />
• The tactical <strong>and</strong> operational cooperation that occurred between State police jurisdictions, o<strong>the</strong>r State<br />
agencies, Commonwealth <strong>and</strong> international agencies was unprecedented in many areas <strong>and</strong>, with <strong>the</strong><br />
policies, systems <strong>and</strong> relationships developed, provides a significant legacy.<br />
• In many areas, <strong>the</strong> training courses developed in preparation for <strong>the</strong> Games will benefit future<br />
operations through enhanced capability.<br />
• In respect of counter terrorism capability, improved cross-jurisdictional training, upgraded<br />
infrastructure at various locations, <strong>and</strong> major electronic surveillance assets acquired will provide a<br />
long-term benefit to <strong>the</strong> community <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> NSW Police Service.<br />
• At <strong>the</strong> time of <strong>the</strong> Games <strong>the</strong> intelligence based risk management methodology developed by <strong>the</strong><br />
Olympic Intelligence Centre was regarded internationally as “world best practice” <strong>and</strong> has been<br />
adopted for use at o<strong>the</strong>r international sporting events.<br />
Health <strong>and</strong> Medical<br />
• Invaluable experience <strong>and</strong> skills gained will benefit future health care services provided to<br />
major events.<br />
• Partnerships between NSW Department of Health, Public Health Units, emergency departments,<br />
laboratories <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Government agencies have been enhanced.<br />
• The Olympic surveillance <strong>and</strong> reporting experience has provided a valuable framework for future use.<br />
• The Olympic Food Safety Program provided <strong>the</strong> following legacies:<br />
Area Public Health Units can utilise Operation Foodwatch data.<br />
Minor assets acquired to support <strong>the</strong> Games program will be utilised by Public Health Units.<br />
• The Olympic Environmental Health Program provided <strong>the</strong> following legacies:<br />
The establishment of an accurate cooling tower register.<br />
