PART THREE : LEGACY ASSETS FOR NSW<br />
The Velodrome’s domed structure covers about 11,000 square metres. Surrounding <strong>the</strong> track are 3,150<br />
permanent spectator seats, raked to provide <strong>the</strong> best possible sightlines. The infield can be configured<br />
for o<strong>the</strong>r sports, such as basketball <strong>and</strong> badminton, <strong>and</strong> for uses such as exhibitions, trade shows<br />
<strong>and</strong> banquets.<br />
The building also includes race <strong>and</strong> commentary facilities, athletes' change rooms <strong>and</strong> gymnasium, venue<br />
<strong>and</strong> management rooms, amenities <strong>and</strong> retail services.<br />
Sydney International Shooting Centre<br />
The Centre, with seating for 1,250 people, incorporates three Olympic shotgun ranges; a fully enclosed 10<br />
metre indoor range for air rifle, air pistol <strong>and</strong> moving target disciplines; a 25-metre pistol range; 50-metre<br />
range; <strong>and</strong> a purpose-built range for finals.<br />
The complex is positioned to nestle into <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>scape. Extensive l<strong>and</strong>scape protection <strong>and</strong> rehabilitation<br />
measures enhance regeneration of <strong>the</strong> remnant Cumberl<strong>and</strong> Plain Woodl<strong>and</strong>.<br />
The Centre’s buildings incorporate energy saving devices related to power use, natural ventilation <strong>and</strong><br />
light, water consumption <strong>and</strong> re-use, including solar collectors providing hot water, <strong>and</strong> use of collected<br />
rainwater for irrigation. Noise insulation devices have been incorporated into <strong>the</strong> design of each of <strong>the</strong><br />
internal shooting ranges.<br />
Sydney International Regatta Centre<br />
This picturesque facility, set on <strong>the</strong> Penrith Lakes, features a 2.3 kilometre competition lake with a<br />
spectator pavilion with gr<strong>and</strong>st<strong>and</strong> seating for 1,000 people, VIP <strong>and</strong> function rooms, dining <strong>and</strong> media<br />
rooms. It has architecturally designed start <strong>and</strong> finish towers, a 1.5 kilometre warm-up lake <strong>and</strong> boatsheds<br />
for 160 craft. It provides a world-class sporting venue for NSW <strong>and</strong> also provides a recreation <strong>and</strong> leisure<br />
area for <strong>the</strong> people of Western Sydney.<br />
Over 18,000 native trees <strong>and</strong> 12,000 native shrubs have been planted. The grounds are open to <strong>the</strong><br />
public for picnics, cycling <strong>and</strong> relaxation seven days a week.<br />
Penrith Whitewater Stadium<br />
A separate whitewater slalom canoe course has been constructed at Penrith Lakes within <strong>the</strong> warm-up<br />
lake in <strong>the</strong> Regatta Centre. The course consists of a 300 metre whitewater course complete with artificial<br />
beaches <strong>and</strong> obstacles, which can be added or removed for different levels of difficulty. Water can be<br />
pumped down <strong>the</strong> course at <strong>the</strong> rate of up to 14 cubic metres a second.<br />
These facilities are available for elite competitors <strong>and</strong> also for recreational use by <strong>the</strong> community.<br />
Blacktown Olympic Centre<br />
The Centre incorporates softball fields, baseball diamonds, an Olympic st<strong>and</strong>ard syn<strong>the</strong>tic surfaced<br />
athletics track <strong>and</strong> grassed throwing facilities. There are three softball diamonds <strong>and</strong> spectator facilities<br />
<strong>and</strong> it contains Australia's first wheelchair softball diamond.<br />
The Centre is <strong>the</strong> home for <strong>the</strong> New South Wales Softball Association <strong>and</strong> is one of <strong>the</strong> primary facilities in<br />
Sydney for baseball <strong>and</strong> softball, as well as being a competition venue for regional athletics.<br />
Ryde Aquatic Centre<br />
Originally not included in <strong>the</strong> Games program, it was only through <strong>the</strong> strongest lobbying by members of<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> women’s team that International Swimming Federation (FINA) <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> IOC agreed to <strong>the</strong><br />
last-minute inclusion of women’s water polo in <strong>the</strong> Sydney <strong>2000</strong> program. The inclusion of women’s water<br />
