PART FIVE : THE SYDNEY <strong>2000</strong> LEGACY<br />
Increased awareness of <strong>and</strong> compliance with NSW Public Health Act (1991), particularly for<br />
swimming pools <strong>and</strong> cooling towers.<br />
• The Games Vessel Inspection Program will continue to be conducted by <strong>the</strong> South Eastern<br />
<strong>and</strong> Central Sydney Public Health Units to cover Sydney based charter vessels <strong>and</strong> visiting<br />
international ships.<br />
• Counter Disaster Services during <strong>the</strong> Games provided <strong>the</strong> following legacies:<br />
Increased awareness <strong>and</strong> training in disaster response for health personnel.<br />
Retention of protective equipment <strong>and</strong> pharmaceuticals.<br />
Hospital decontamination units developed for <strong>the</strong> Games allow <strong>the</strong> management of contaminated<br />
patients onsite.<br />
Waterways <strong>and</strong> Harbour Management<br />
• Enhanced underst<strong>and</strong>ing of <strong>the</strong> operational requirements for large events. Resources <strong>and</strong> logistics<br />
were managed efficiently in a complex operating environment.<br />
• The Sydney Harbour Operations Centre has been reestablished at Rozelle Bay as a State Operations<br />
Centre from September 2001. This Centre functions as a central control mechanism for major events<br />
on Sydney Harbour <strong>and</strong> elsewhere in NSW, as well as a comm<strong>and</strong> centre to manage incidents <strong>and</strong><br />
safety compliance campaigns.<br />
• The Sydney Harbour Plan of Management has provided a snapshot of Sydney Harbour in <strong>the</strong> year<br />
<strong>2000</strong> that can be used for future planning <strong>and</strong> waterways management.<br />
• The Super Yacht Marina represents a legacy asset for <strong>the</strong> NSW Government.<br />
O<strong>the</strong>r Olympic Services<br />
NSW Fire Brigades<br />
• NSWFB improved its capacity to deliver a world-class fire <strong>and</strong> emergency service.<br />
• Enhanced underst<strong>and</strong>ing of <strong>the</strong> operational requirements for large events. Both planning <strong>and</strong> delivery<br />
stages provided NSWFB with critical experience.<br />
• NSWFB resources <strong>and</strong> logistics can be managed efficiently in a complex operational environment.<br />
Examples include rosters, accreditation, training, <strong>and</strong> resource mix given diverse Games venues.<br />
• Partnerships with o<strong>the</strong>r agencies to deliver an integrated service to <strong>the</strong> community.<br />
• New skills provided by Games planning <strong>and</strong> training will improve future NSWFB services.<br />
• A major legacy resulting from <strong>the</strong> Games is NSWFB's enhanced capability <strong>and</strong> expertise in dealing<br />
with Chemical, Biological <strong>and</strong> Radiological threats.<br />
Sport <strong>and</strong> Recreation<br />
• The sporting community of NSW, particularly Western Sydney, has been left with a legacy of world<br />
class sporting facilities. It is anticipated that <strong>the</strong> availability of <strong>the</strong>se facilities will increase sport<br />
participation rates.<br />
• Department staff gained valuable experience in providing services <strong>and</strong> facilities for elite athletes at a<br />
major international event.<br />
• Disadvantaged youth have been given <strong>the</strong> opportunity to experience <strong>the</strong> Games <strong>and</strong> have shown a<br />
greater interest in participating in sport.<br />
• Post Olympic programs have been developed to promote sport in <strong>the</strong> community.<br />
National Parks <strong>and</strong> Wildlife Service<br />
• Valuable project management <strong>and</strong> event planning experience.<br />
• Enhanced facilities for spectators at Sydney Harbour vantage points.<br />
• International promotion of Sydney Harbour through <strong>the</strong> facilitation of television broadcasts <strong>and</strong><br />
o<strong>the</strong>r photography.<br />
