about the establishment <strong>of</strong> exotic plantings, measure <strong>and</strong> document growth details.<br />
6. Liaise with government authorities <strong>and</strong> adjacent l<strong>and</strong>owners to promote the control <strong>of</strong><br />
environmental weeds on l<strong>and</strong>s adjoining <strong>Dry<strong>and</strong>ra</strong>.<br />
7. Consider the potential for weed introduction <strong>and</strong> spread when planning management<br />
operations, eg. road maintenance, particularly where adjacent to weed sources. Modify<br />
strategies as necessary.<br />
8. Involve volunteer groups in weed control where appropriate (see Section 26. Community Liaison<br />
<strong>and</strong> Involvement).<br />
Research <strong>and</strong> Monitoring<br />
9. Keep abreast <strong>of</strong> new information in weed research <strong>and</strong> new methods <strong>of</strong> control. Utilise this new<br />
knowledge to modify control programs, where appropriate, using specialist assistance.<br />
10. Monitor <strong>and</strong> report on the effectiveness <strong>and</strong> potential ecological side-effects <strong>of</strong> control<br />
programs.<br />
21. INTRODUCED ANIMALS<br />
BACKGROUND<br />
Non-indigenous animals such as foxes, rabbits, feral 7 cats <strong>and</strong> pigs, <strong>and</strong> domestic pets are pests in the<br />
natural environment <strong>and</strong> have a detrimental effect on native biota. They predate native fauna,<br />
compete with them for food <strong>and</strong> shelter, <strong>and</strong> cause damage to native plants <strong>and</strong> habitats by grazing,<br />
trampling <strong>and</strong> digging.<br />
