It doesn't surprise us to see a profound and<br />
highly disciplined artist indulge in lighthearted<br />
whimsical projects as an escape from<br />
his more demanding work. But when the<br />
extra-curricular activity wins equal passion<br />
with the serious work,that's a novelty. A case<br />
in point is an exuberant graphic artist we<br />

know,Andrzej Kot of Lublin, Poland.<br />
Born in 1946, Kot went to school in<br />
Lublin,servecl two years in the army and then<br />
took up his career in graphics as an illustrator,<br />
calligrapher and typographer. He's known<br />
the pleasure of professional recognition: his<br />
work appeared at the Biennale of Graphic<br />

Design in Czechoslovakia, 1978. He represented<br />
Poland in the 1981 Scriptura Calendar<br />
for the Gutenberg Museum, West Germany.<br />
He was commissioned to provide the calligraphy<br />
for the book,Moral Talk, by the 1980<br />
Nobel prize-winner for literature,Czeslaw<br />
Milosz, and his work was featured in a 1980<br />
issue of the Polish arts magazine,Projekt.<br />
But from his earliest days as a graphic<br />
artist, Kot has had a penchant for what he calls<br />
art-zart, art jokes. The outlets for his fun are<br />
the book plates,ex libris designs, he concocts<br />
for friends, himself, book collectors and com-<br />
plete strangers who become his clients. The<br />
