Editorial Have you ever wondered what preserves a company through a recession and what makes one company go from strength to strength whilst others fall by the wayside or become swallowed by larger organisations? A review of the business world literature would suggest that company brand, partnering with customers, funding cuts and many other factors impact upon company survival but most miss that all important ingredient – innovation and invention! Traditionally, the accountant will take a hard look at the books and make judgements upon the bottom line, i.e. where can savings be made. On the other hand, the manager may see the value of people as the main resource and try to protect good staff from redundancy. However, a recession (and let us hope that we are out of this current one soon) is actually an opportunity for change because it provides the impetus that does away with complacency. In good times, it is all too easy to sit back on the laurels and continue to do things the way that they have always been done – it certainly makes for an easier life – and it can take a strong will and determination to push forward something new and innovative. In a recession an organisation must actively seek to adopt new, more efficient and effective practices, procedures and protocols as a means of weathering the economic storm. But invention and innovation are part of what makes the human race unique. A short look at the history books will soon show that necessity is indeed the mother of invention as illustrated by the Ancient Greeks, Romans and Victorians - great races of people who helped to shape the western world as it is today. Now, within the plant and equipment industry, the good and the great are already stepping up to the mark to adopt new inventions or become far more innovative in dealing with customers (an outward perspective) and improving processes (an inward perspective). Innovation is somewhat different from invention though and in the next issue of PEP (October 2010), the editors will devote a large section of the journal to these important aspects of modern management within the plant and equipment community.
