Isabel Lane test-drives bicycles for the smart city dweller and gets the lowdown on a no-nonsense Brussels furniture designer TREND WATCH Pedal power Get on your bike to arrive in style this summer Long gone are the days when cycling meant a serious style swerve – there are now several must-have models designed specifi cally for the trendy urbanite. One of our favourite bike makers is Electra (electrabike.com), the brand behind those gorgeous Cruiser, Townie and Amsterdam cycles. We’re smitten with the Amsterdam Girard range, which features the work of 1950s textile designer Alexander Girard. Global sports giant Puma (puma-bikes.com), meanwhile, has teamed up with Danish bicycle manufacturer Biomega (biomega.dk/puma) to create a range of colourful city cycles, some of which are handily foldable. And closer to home, Sleepstreet (sleepstreetbicycles.com) is a new Belgian company that specialises in sleek, custom-made steel bikes characterised by clean lines and bright colours. What? Bautier designs furniture for companies such as the UK’s Case, Belgium’s Feld, Japan’s Idée and Sweden’s Swedese. Where? Her studio is in Forest, near the arty, creative neighbourhood of Saint-Gilles. She says “My furniture is functional, simple, practical and wooden. It is made to be used.” Inspired by Bautier started making wooden objects at the age of 10 and fi nds inspiration in how things are made, the materials used, observing life in the home and considering new solutions. “I also really admire Elisabeth Johansson of Swedese,” she says. She loves “Wiels – a Brussels contemporary art museum in an old brewery. Henri (Rue de Flandre) for lunch, and the Place Van Meenen food market on Mondays in Saint-Gilles.” What’s next? The launch of her brand, called Ma, in September, with a day bed, lounge chair and her Portmanteau coat hook.
