Head for the 34 Brussels Airlines b.there! magazine August <strong>2011</strong> hills A sharp contrast to the flatlands of Northern Belgium, the rolling slopes of the Ardennes are high on scenic beauty, low on tourists and a haven for walkers and cyclists. Matt Barr hits the trail
IMAGE GETTY IMAGES BELGIAN ARDENNES \\\ The words ‘peaceful’ and ‘scenic’ may well have been coined with the Belgian Ardennes in mind. With snaking paths leading up through rolling hills, and beautiful vantage points from which to take in some of northern Europe’s most underrated views, it’s the kind of place that demands leisurely exploration – making it perfect for walking and cycling holidays. Even better, this southeastern Belgian nook is relatively undiscovered by tourists. Namur, the capital of Wallonia, makes a good base for newcomers to the region. It’s increasingly attracting attention away from Brussels due to its idyllic location at the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse rivers, fabulous cuisine and fascinating sights such as the Namur Citadel. Once you’ve got your bearings, you can saddle up or don your walking boots and head out into the countryside to admire the lush scenery of river valleys, dense forests, castles and stone-built houses. Heels and wheels For walkers, this region has the lot, from woodland paths for beginners to longer rambles through the valleys for seasoned hikers. Cycling fans will enjoy the winding back roads, long riverside stretches and cyclist-friendly inns along many of the routes, as well as the hills themselves. The Belgians are so keen on walking and cycling that the authorities have upgraded and converted 1,200km of track, byway and towpath into a network known as RAVeL, making the Ardennes even more accessible to visitors in the process. There are a number of ways to explore, with maps and itineraries available online and from local tourist offices throughout the region. Just be sure to pack a hat and a raincoat before you hit the trail, so you’re prepared for the unpredictable conditions: as the saying goes in Belgium, “If you don’t like the weather, wait 10 minutes…” Brussels Airlines b.there! magazine August <strong>2011</strong> 35
