Fungi saprotrophici vel parasitici vel mycorrhizales; asci globosi in toto ascomate sparsi, raro hymenium<br />

<strong>for</strong>mantes; asci plerumque evanescentes, nonnumquam bitunicati. Ascosporae plerumque unicellulares,<br />

lenticulares, nonnumquam globosae vel ellipsoideae. Ascomata, si <strong>for</strong>mata, plerumque cleistothecialia vel<br />

gymnothecialia, saepe textura stromatica circumdata. Structurae hamatheciales absentes. Gametangia<br />

plerumque indistincta e glomere hyphali constantia. Fungi saepe laete colorati. Anamorphae variabiles,<br />

seu phialidicae seu arthroconidiales.<br />

Typus: Eurotium Link 1809.<br />

Saprotrophic, parasitic and mycorrhizal. Ascomata, when present, usually<br />

cleistothecial/gymnothecial, globose, often produced in surrounding stromatic tissue<br />

and brightly coloured; hamathecial elements lacking; gametangia usually<br />

undifferentiated and consisting of hyphal coils. Asci usually evanescent, sometimes<br />

bitunicate, scattered throughout the ascoma, rarely from a hymenium. Ascospores<br />

usually single-celled, lenticular, sometimes spherical or elliptical. Anamorphs variable,<br />

including phialidic and arthroconidial <strong>for</strong>ms.<br />

This name was employed by Lutzoni et al. (2004) and Geiser et al. (2007), in the<br />

same sense as the present classification, but without a <strong>for</strong>mal diagnosis.<br />
