crofossils, such as calcareous algae (Mizzia, Gymnoco<strong>di</strong>um, Atractyliopsis, Vermiporella, etc.), foraminifers<br />

(Colaniella, Geinitzina, Pachyphloia, Globivalvulina, Paraglobivalvulina, Nankinella,<br />

etc.), ostracodes and Prolematica (ref. Broglio Loriga et alii, 1988). The macrofossils are represented<br />

by bivalves (Aviculopecten, Towapteria, Permophorus, etc.), gastropods (inclu<strong>di</strong>ng Bellerophon<br />

ssp. that gives its name to the formation), and nautiloids (Stache, 1877, 1878; Caneva,<br />

1906; Merla, 1930; Broglio, Loriga et al, 1988; Posenato, 1999; Posenato, Prinoth, 2004).<br />

The lithofacies documented in the Bellerophon Formation (and also the fossil associations) are in<strong>di</strong>cative<br />

of a shallow-water coastal and sea environments. A large fraction of these in<strong>di</strong>cate an Upper<br />

Permian age, but does not allow a more detailed correlation. This unit, although loosely bracketed<br />

likely in<strong>di</strong>cates continuity across the Permo-Triassic boundary.<br />

Recent reports of Paratyrolites (markers of the second to last chronozone of the Changxingian) under<br />

the Comelicania strata, evidence of conodont fauna at the base of the Werfen Formation, and especially<br />

the identification of Hindeodus parvus in the lowest part of the Tesero Horizon strongly suggest<br />

that any possible hiatus at the Permian-Triassic boundary would be small if at all present.<br />

Most of the evaporitic sequence of the lower unit consists of laminar sulphate evaporites, perhaps deposited<br />

across a wide lagoon and dammed in the east-northeast by structural highs controlled by the<br />

synse<strong>di</strong>mentary tectonics (Massari et alii, 1994; Massari & Neri, 1997). However, in other areas the<br />

carbonates in the upper unit document a transition to a ramp depositional model, with subsidence<br />

gra<strong>di</strong>ents and an average seafloor depths that progressively increased from west to east.
