Liberal Arts Institutions and the
International Student Experience
Room 230
Liberal arts institutions are uniquely
positioned to educate and prepare
international students for a world where
the only constant is change. This session
focuses on academic, residential, and
cocurricular experiences of international
students at small, residential institutions.
This session is of interest to international
student advisers as well as those working
Love Knows No Boundaries: Romantic
Relationships During Exchange
Room 264
Exchange is both an academic and
personal experience. Orientations often
leave out the discussion of dating and
focus on safety. The University of
Wisconsin-Eau-Claire surveyed outbound
and inbound exchange students about
romantic relationships. They share their
results and tools for incorporating this
topic in orientation, departure, and
reentry programming.
Maximizing the Retention Effect of Study
Abroad Through Intentional
Programming
Room 276
Research suggests that study abroad
participants at U.S. institutions are more
likely to graduate. Can this connection be
maximized to better serve at-risk groups?
This session summarizes current research
and varied institutional approaches to
influence participation and student
retention, including programming for firstgeneration,
academically at-risk, and
second-year students.
New Global Partnerships Through Online
Collaborations: Results from the COIL
Institute
Room 263
Course collaborations through an
emerging internationalization strategy
known as globally networked learning
provide a new vector to create global
partnerships. We will examine outcomes
and best practices from a recent National
Endowment for the Humanities–funded
institute wherein the SUNY Collaborative
Online International Learning (COIL) Center
supported 50-plus universities and
colleges from around the world to create
such partnerships. We will be joined by
faculty and international programs staff to
discuss their experiences.
Chair and Presenter: John E. Fowler,
