from 125 South Korean pre- and in-service<br />
teachers who spent one month in the<br />
United States engaged in practical skill<br />
training and teaching in urban elementary<br />
schools. Students’ words are used to<br />
highlight the cultural and professional<br />
learning that takes place during professional<br />
exchanges.<br />

First Do No Harm: Exploring the Impact of<br />
Short-Term Study Abroad Programs on<br />

Study abroad programs’ impact is usually<br />
assessed in terms of students’ academic<br />
and personal growth. However, host<br />
communities are also affected by this<br />
sustained interaction. Through group<br />
discussion and an experiential exercise<br />
session, participants hone their ability to<br />
identify program models that promote<br />
sustainable partnerships and mitigate the<br />
negative impact on host communities.<br />

respect to cultural and linguistic diversity,<br />
and model practices. Speakers will discuss<br />
the implications regarding the participation<br />
of new countries in European projects and<br />
programs such as Erasmus.<br />
