Chapter 7: Working in the <strong>OpenEdge</strong> Environment in Windows<br />

Windows 64-bit<br />

<strong>OpenEdge</strong> on Windows 64-bit is considered a “server-only” release, providing access<br />

to memory in excess of 2GB to database servers, WebSpeed, AppServer, batch<br />

clients, <strong>and</strong> character clients. In addition, the Microsoft .NET Open Client interface<br />

.dll files are included, allowing customers who use the Open Client interface to<br />

develop 64-bit applications. as discussed in the following sections:<br />

• Limited 32-bit client availability<br />

• Application development <strong>and</strong> deployment<br />

• <strong>Product</strong> <strong>and</strong> database interactions<br />

Limited 32-bit client availability<br />

For local use of the Data Dictionary <strong>and</strong> Data Administration, a subset of products<br />

include the Windows 32-bit graphical client (prowin32.exe). The client is intended for<br />

single-user or loop-back database connections to perform database administration<br />

functions such as schema changes. The products that include the 32-bit client are:<br />

• <strong>OpenEdge</strong> Workgroup RDBMS<br />

• <strong>OpenEdge</strong> Enterprise RDBMS<br />

• <strong>OpenEdge</strong> DataServer for ORACLE<br />

• <strong>OpenEdge</strong> DataServer for ODBC<br />

• <strong>OpenEdge</strong> DataServer for Microsoft SQL Server<br />

Note: XML <strong>and</strong> .NET support is enabled within the <strong>OpenEdge</strong> 64-bit environment for<br />

the 32-bit client (prowin32.exe) in the Windows 64-bit platform. This support<br />

began in <strong>OpenEdge</strong> Release 10.2B04.<br />

The following products include the Microsoft .NET Open Client interface .dll files,<br />

allowing customers who use the Open Client interface to develop 64-bit applications:<br />

• <strong>OpenEdge</strong> Workgroup RDBMS<br />

• <strong>OpenEdge</strong> Enterprise RDBMS<br />
