Chapter 7: Working in the OpenEdge Environment in Windows Windows 64-bit OpenEdge on Windows 64-bit is considered a “server-only” release, providing access to memory in excess of 2GB to database servers, WebSpeed, AppServer, batch clients, and character clients. In addition, the Microsoft .NET Open Client interface .dll files are included, allowing customers who use the Open Client interface to develop 64-bit applications. as discussed in the following sections: • Limited 32-bit client availability • Application development and deployment • Product and database interactions Limited 32-bit client availability For local use of the Data Dictionary and Data Administration, a subset of products include the Windows 32-bit graphical client (prowin32.exe). The client is intended for single-user or loop-back database connections to perform database administration functions such as schema changes. The products that include the 32-bit client are: • OpenEdge Workgroup RDBMS • OpenEdge Enterprise RDBMS • OpenEdge DataServer for ORACLE • OpenEdge DataServer for ODBC • OpenEdge DataServer for Microsoft SQL Server Note: XML and .NET support is enabled within the OpenEdge 64-bit environment for the 32-bit client (prowin32.exe) in the Windows 64-bit platform. This support began in OpenEdge Release 10.2B04. The following products include the Microsoft .NET Open Client interface .dll files, allowing customers who use the Open Client interface to develop 64-bit applications: • OpenEdge Workgroup RDBMS • OpenEdge Enterprise RDBMS • OpenEdge DataServer for ORACLE • OpenEdge DataServer for ODBC • OpenEdge DataServer for Microsoft SQL Server • OpenEdge Development Server • OpenEdge Application Server Basic • OpenEdge Application Server Enterprise 240 OpenEdge Getting Started: Installation and Configuration
Application development and deployment Developing and deploying applications for Windows 64-bit, requires special considerations, as discussed in the following sections: • ABL Development • ABL Deployment ABL Development Windows 64-bit Application development, using OpenEdge development tools, requires the OpenEdge Windows 32-bit product suite. This must be installed on a separate machine, The graphical development products are not part of the Windows 64-bit product, and you can not install both the 32-bit and 64-bit OpenEdge Windows products of the same version on the same machine. The general steps for development and deployment are: 1. Develop your ABL application in Windows 32-bit. 2. Compile the application on Windows 32-bit. 3. Copy the r-code to Windows 64-bit for deployment. You are now ready to deploy your application. Note: If you follow standard guidelines for r-code portability, r-code from a UNIX 64-bit platform can be deployed on Windows 64-bit. OpenEdge Getting Started: Installation and Configuration 241
