Editorial
Ford of Britain
managing director
Mark Ovenden
shares his news
and views
October was a very good month for Ford:
we exceeded both expected sales volume
and market share, with the best retail sales
since the launch of the new Fiesta in 2008.
Both Fiesta and Focus continued to sell
very strongly, and there is clear evidence in
both retail and fl eet that the new Focus is
really gathering sales momentum.
FCSD has continued to turn in a very
strong performance, with some major
successes in 2011. The Nectar loyalty
programme has seen a doubling of transaction
volumes since its relaunch during the
year. Ford Assistance, the Ford branded
breakdown and recovery programme, has
achieved a threefold increase in participation
over 2010 levels and Ford Accident
Management has received strong industry
and political support, including two prestigious
awards.
Best of all, customer satisfaction and
workshop quality both end the year at
record levels. And, in spite of the weaker
economy, strong sales have been maintained
throughout the year including a
record revenue of $63 million in September
– an all-time record.
Clearly, events in the Eurozone are
creating uncertainty in both the economy
and consumer confi dence. Fortunately, the
British market has to date proven fairly
resilient to economic pressure, and supported
by our best-ever product line-up we
will continue to make the most of whatever
business is there.
As we go into 2012, the focus of all of us
must be to continue to maximise our sales
volume, market share and profi t, and also
work to drive up the satisfaction of our key
stakeholders - customers, dealers and
employees.
I would like to thank each and every
employee for their continued work and
support in 2011, a tough year that Ford will
end with 35 years’ leadership of the car
market and 46 years leading commercial
vehicles.
And it is a year which will end with Fiesta
as Britain’s best selling car, marking the
40th successive year we have held that title.
We should all be very proud of our results,
which we could not have achieved without
the support of the wider Ford team.
Now we can look forward to 2012, with
products such as the new 1.0-litre Eco-
Boost petrol engine which Alan Mulally
launched during a visit to Cologne; this new
engine has fantastic performance and low
CO2, and will certainly further strengthen
Ford’s position.
During the year we can also look forward
to launching the exciting new B-MAX, along
with the new Ranger, Focus ST, Fiesta
mid-cycle action, Transit one-tonne model
and new Kuga.
I wish you all a happy and healthy Christmas
and New Year with your families and
hope you are looking forward to coming
back relaxed and refreshed and ready for
whatever challenges 2012 will present.
Offi cial fi gures released by the Society of
2010.
The Fiesta was the UK best seller in
October and the Fiesta and the Focus were
the number one and two top sellers for the
year to date. Ford Transit continues as the
with the same period in 2010.
SMMT tribute to
Ford’s centenary
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders
(SMMT) has acknowledged Ford’s centenary in
Britain with a display of three iconic Ford
vehicles: a Model T built at Trafford Park,
Manchester, in 1912; a Transit van built at
Southampton and a new Focus powered by a
Bridgend-built 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine, have
been displayed at the SMMT’s central London
headquarters.
Ford of Britain chairman and SMMT deputy
president Joe Greenwell said: “Ford of Britain has
been in the fabric of the nation for more than
100 years and no motor company has touched
more lives in Britain. We have a proud heritage
and a bright future.”
Ford’s continued UK market leadership.
Ford dominates at
top fl eet awards
Ford came home from the 2011 ACFO
awards with four of the seven available fl eet
business trophies.
Two of Ford’s awards went to the allnew
Focus launched this year – which was
named Fleet Car of the Year by ACFO, the
Association of Car Fleet Operators.
The other pair of Ford awards was won
by its commercial vehicle stars – the Transit,
which is the UK’s top selling van, and its
compact sibling, the Transit Connect.
The Transit Connect Van was voted
Small Van of the Year for the ninth year in
succession, while Transit returned to the
winner’s rostrum to become Large Van of
the Year for the fi fteenth time in the awards’
history.
Determined by infl uential ACFO fl eet
operator members, their Fleet Car of the
Year trophy went to the new Focus – within
months of going on sale. Its innovative
Driver Assistance Pack, which offers seven
advanced accident prevention technologies
for only £750, is ACFO’s Fleet Safety
Initiative of the Year.
Ford of Britain fl eet director, Kevin Griffi n,
said: “This early industry endorsement of
our new Focus confi rms it as a company
car of choice. ACFO members’ opinions are
highly prized as they refl ect the day-to-day
operational experience and expertise of fl eet
decision-makers.”
“Ford’s safety award for the all-new
Focus’ Driver Assistance Pack is further
proof that our investment in technology
is relevant, affordable and recognised by
company car drivers. Winning two further
awards for Transit and Transit Connect
reinforces the choice and value we offer
to commercial vehicle as well as car
customers.”
Ford’s Driver Assistance Pack features
Traffi c Sign Recognition, which uses a
camera to scan speed signs and displays a
reminder of the last sign passed, Active City
Stop to brake the car if the vehicle in front
stops suddenly, an alert to static or moving
obstacles in the blind spot, auto high
beam, lane keeping aid and lane departure
warning, and a warning if erratic driver
behaviour could indicate excessive fatigue.
ACFO chairman Julie Jenner said:
“Fleet decision-makers are reliant on
manufacturers to deliver vehicles that are
cost effective to operate, safe, reliable and
environmentally-friendly. The availability of
top quality vehicles maintains downtime to
a minimum and fl eet managers can focus
more on the effi cient operation of vehicles
to support their businesses.”
A Christmas extravaganza
Dagenham’s Mark Brent is putting on a
£25,000 Christmas lights and special effects
show at his terraced house in Dagenham to
raise money for a meningitis charity after his
cousin nearly died of the disease.
Mark, who works in Dagenham Engine
Plant on Lynx Assembly, revived his tradition
of putting up a Christmas lights display
last year after his cousin, Sam Gilbert, then
19, nearly died of the disease in September.
With a North Pole theme, the centrepiece
of Mark’s light show was a £4,500 special
effect display imported from the US which
makes it look like Santa’s rummaging round
Mark’s top fl oor bedroom – with video
footage of this unexpected visitor posted on
YouTube.
Mark spent months decorating his home,
helped by wife Kayleigh, and attracted radio
and press interest, and also hundreds of
visitors who helped him raise £2,475 for the
Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF).
Having spent all his spare money on
Christmas lights since he was 14, nine years
ago, Mark said: “One of my main aims is to
raise awareness of meningitis, because
early symptoms are just like an ordinary
cold. Our generation is not meningitisaware,
so I wanted to fl ag up the warning
signs so everyone seeks immediate medical
help if they’re concerned.”
Sam’s dad Kevin is a Dagenham-based
Ford engineer, and his brother Ben is on the
Tiger Assembly line in Dagenham Diesel
Centre.
Kevin said: “We’re so proud of what Mark
is doing. Doctors told us if we’d delayed 30
minutes Sam would have been dead.”
Having started putting up the 70,000
mostly LED lights at the start of October,
the offi cial switch-on took place at the start
of December. Leafl ets promoting meningitis
awareness were handed out.
Mark changes the music and dance
shows each week in the run up to
Christmas.
And the cost? Mark added: “It only costs
about £5 extra electricity each day, because
Ford has once again come to the aid of disabled
service skiers to compete in winter sports events
with the provision of a new Transit minibus.
The nine-seater Tourneo 280 short wheelbase
Transit will be used by the Combined Services
Disabled Ski Team (CSDST) to transport athletes
and their equipment around the Alps this winter.
It is the third consecutive year that Ford has
assisted the team.
The CSDST is a registered charity which
provides quality race coaching to serving
members of the armed forces, and to veterans,
all of whom have a permanent disability. Most
6 Ford News December 2011/January 2012
most are LEDs. I have spent a lot on the
lights, but they are added to every year.
“It is a major commitment. It takes three
weeks’ planning and nine weeks to put up
all the lights, but it only takes three days to
take down. And with all those decorations
outside, we don’t go big on decorations in
the house – just a tree for the children.”
“It is hard work, but it’s worth it to alert
people to meningitis. We hope to top the
150-plus visitors at last year’s switch on,
including scores of Dagenham colleagues
following a poster campaign across plant.”
Visit Mark’s display at 65 Valence Wood
Road, Dagenham, RM8 3AP every evening
and at weekends throughout December.
members were injured on active service, and
several are double amputees.
“Ford’s assistance in providing the Tourneo is
greatly appreciated,” said team deputy chairman
Lt Col Mike Quaile. “It enables us to move the
skiers and their equipment, and without it we
would struggle.”
Transit brand manager David Petts added:
“Ford is very pleased to again assist the team.
The work being done by the team’s trainers, and
the efforts being made by team members
themselves, is not only inspirational but gives
everyone great pride.” The ski team with their new minibus

tours Bridgend Engine Plant
Labour leader Ed Miliband is the latest
high-profi le visitor to Bridgend Engine Plant
(BEP) who wanted to see a highly successful
contributor to the UK economy in action.
He was accompanied on his tour by
Wales First Minister Carwyn Jones, who is
also the Assembly Member for Bridgend.
Mr Miliband was welcomed by plant
manager Kieran Cahill, Ford of Britain
chairman Joe Greenwell and senior members
of the plant team, including convenor
Steve Rees, before getting a short personal
briefi ng on BEP’s production and plans for
the immediate future.
He also met some of the 1,800 production
workers as he toured the plant and lines
making four, six and eight cylinder engines
before taking part in a question and answer
More prestigious awards for Ford
Ford has won the coveted Manufacturer of
the Year title in the 2012 Fleet Van awards.
“The judges felt that none of the other
manufacturers could offer the range and
quality of aftersales back-up from Ford,”
said Fleet Van editor Trevor Gelken.
“They were judging the whole package
that comes from the minute a customer
enters a showroom or picks up the
telephone to the minute that the vehicle is
sold on.”
Ford also won some other awards in
November; following two awards from
Bodyshop Magazine, Ford Customer
Service Division picked up the ‘Vehicle
Manufacturer Bodyshop Network Market
Leader – Network Development’ award from
the Auto Body Professionals (ABP) Club.
Collision repair marketing manager Paul
McDermott, said: “I was delighted to collect
this prestigious award on behalf of the
team, hot on the heels of our two recent
Bodyshop Magazine awards.
“This is further recognition for the hard
work we have put in, particularly with the
creation of our innovative and industrychanging
Ford Accident Management
programme.”
FCSD has also won two Nectar Network
awards – the Coalition and Colleague
Engagement Awards. Ford is approaching
its tenth anniversary with Nectar, the UK’s
largest loyalty scheme; at Ford, Nectar
points are awarded for MOTs, non-warranty
repairs and servicing.
The first of the two awards was for a
campaign to drive customers’ long-term
loyalty to Nectar partners, and the second
for a very successful dealer awareness plan
that resulted in a 20 per cent increase in the
number of Nectar participating Ford dealers
and 96 per cent increase in transactions
year-on-year.
Awards
presentation,
“In January, Ford ran 14 national
interactive Nectar workshops at seven
locations. These aimed to raise Nectar
awareness and show the value of Nectar to
Ford dealers,” said FCSD’s Nadya Ludhor.
“An e-learning module launched in March
incentivised staff to increase their Nectar
knowledge and promote it to customers,
with points awarded for passing the test to
increase engagement. In August Ford
employed six field managers to visit dealers
and train staff specifically on how to use
Nectar effectively.”
OMC celebrates
100 years with Ford
OMC Ford – originally the Oldham Motor Company – has
celebrated its centenary as a Ford dealer.
The company goes back to 1907 when Ralph Rothwell
Eglin, who owned a bicycle shop in Oldham, started selling
cars built in the town by the Eclipse Machine Company.
Oldham Motor Company became Ford’s thirteenth UK
dealer on 6 October, 1911, and has remained a family
business, with the third and fourth generations of the Eglin
family now running it.
Becoming associated with Ford had much to do with the
fact that Ford was about to start assembling Model T cars at
its new factory at Trafford Park, Manchester.
Oldham Motor Company sold just 10 cars in its fi rst year
as a Ford dealer; today OMC sells more than 2,500 new and
used cars each year plus in excess of 500 commercial
vehicles, with an annual turnover of more than £40 million. It
has 140 employees.
Refl ecting on the company’s century with Ford, director
Robin Eglin said: “I’m proud to have been associated with an
organisation that has played such a key role in the culture of
Britain. Nearly every family at some point will have owned a
Ford, whether it’s a Cortina, Escort, Fiesta or Focus.
“The range of cars available now from Ford I believe is one
of the strongest we have seen, with some amazing technological
developments. I know that despite tough economic
times we can still offer a brand and customer service to
satisfy the customer.”
Taking over at the helm at OMC is Robin’s son Jonathan
– the fourth generation of the Eglin family running the business.
Jonathan sees a bright future for OMC and Ford.
“Leading OMC into the future is a big responsibility, but one
which I am thoroughly looking forward to.”
Ford of Britain directors Andy Barratt and Jon Wellsman,
and Ford Credit Britain managing director John Coffey,
joined the Eglin family at a centenary celebration, where
Andy presented Robin Eglin with a plaque to commemorate
the 100 years of partnership.
Andy said: “Its an honour to be able to celebrate 100 years
of Ford with OMC – its a very special occasion when this
partnership has been entirely with the Eglin family. Clearly
one does not last 100 years without outstanding customer
satisfaction, happy staff and investment in the local
community.”
Ford dealers
rally to the
JDRF cause
Ford dealers are rallying round to raise £100,000 for Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation (JDRF), which Ford has supported globally for
more than 28 years
Ford of Britain chairman, Joe Greenwell, threw down the gauntlet to
dealers to mark the Company’s centennial year in business.
Ford has been a long-term supporter of JDRF’s fl agship annual
fund-raiser, The Walk to Cure Diabetes, both in the UK and abroad.
Ford customers are being invited to donate £1 to JDRF when they visit
any dealership across the UK.
“Since its launch, we are pleased to say the campaign has already
attracted donations of around £26,000 from dealers who were inspired
by the information they received demonstrating the impact that type 1
diabetes can have on a family’s life and JDRF’s mission to fi nd the
cure,” said JDRF head of corporate development Sarah McCullough.
“Dealer groups such as Hartwell, Arnold Clark, People’s, Essex Auto
Group, the Hendy Group and Vertu Motors were among the fi rst to
donate to the charity, making hugely generous gifts to support our
campaign for funding research into type 1 diabetes.
“Since then, there have been bake sales at Sandicliffe in the Midlands,
sky dives by staff at Polar Ford and Dagenham Motors, bike
riding and zip sliding at the Heartlands Ford branch and Lindsay Ford in
Northern Ireland have undertaken a cycle ride to raise money for JDRF.
“Greyhound Ford in East Lancashire are marking their fi ftieth year in
business with a two-week celebration and a showroom event. For every
car sold they are kindly donating £50 to JDRF.”
Joe Greenwell said: “We are delighted to be partnered with JDRF and
supporting them in their mission to fi nd the cure for type 1 diabetes.
“I would like to thank all dealership staff who have invested time and
effort into supporting this worthwhile cause.”
Dealerships interested in taking part should call Sarah McCullough on
0207 841 3652 or email ford@jdrf.org.uk. “To hit the £100,000 target,
each showroom need only raise £150 and there are lots of really easy
ways to fund-raise. With Christmas coming up, they could try a raffl e or
quiz among staff or suggest a customer donation to JDRF when they
come in for their vehicle winter health check,” said Sarah.
Type 1 diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune condition that causes the body’s own
immune system to turn on itself and attack cells in the pancreas which produce
insulin.
The condition affects about 350,000 adults in the UK, including more than
26,000 children and requires multiple daily insulin injections and fi nger prick
blood tests to manage.
It can cause devastating complications including blindness, heart disease,
amputation, stroke and kidney failure, and reduces life expectancy by 20 years.
JDRF exists to fi nd the cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications, and
is the world’s leading charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research.
At a global level, JDRF volunteers and staff have been responsible for
raising more than £900 million to support type 1 diabetes research since the
charity’s inception.

Intrepid fund-raisers Debbie Carr, John Whiting,
Lori Westmoreland, Richard Brown and Sarah
Jackson, from Dagenham Motors in Colindale,
north west London, have taken to the skies to raise
money for JDRF in a 10,000 foot skydive.
Richard Brown said: “We wanted to do something
big that would inspire our colleagues, friends and
family to sponsor us – you can’t get much bigger
than a 10,000 foot skydive!”
Lori Westmoreland said before the jump: “This
really is a huge test for all of us. Personally, I’m not
sure what I’ll be thinking when I jump out of the
plane but I’m excited for the challenge.
“We have been fund-raising inside the dealership
too, with a bake sale which raised more than £90
and an upcoming staff quiz night – everyone in the
business is getting involved.”
Lindsay Ford took to the roads on two wheels and raised £3,000 (and
counting!) for JDRF. A team of 12 staff did a circular tour of all 10 locations
in Northern Ireland. Managing director David Sandford, pictured left, said:
“Well done to all who took up the challenge and thanks also to everyone who
encouraged them. The team ranged from absolute beginners to experienced
cyclists and this is a great achievement for everyone involved.”
Team members were Brendan Doherty, Joe Harvey, Ian Brown, David
McKillen, Scott Paden, Chris Cleary, Philip Sandford, Louise O’Hagan, James
Adair, Greg Whan, Chris Kelly and Gary Bridge.
Bridgend
hosts
career day
Nearly 50 young people from local secondary schools took part
in an Inside Industry day at Bridgend Engine Plant (BEP), intended
to provide an insight into working in a manufacturing plant.
The year 11 pupils from 10 local schools took part in a series of
exercises and experiences. In the plant they had a presentation on
its operations, met senior staff and latest apprentices, and toured
the engine production lines.
They also took part in team building exercises and a practical
test of their abilities as they fi nished assembly of test engines,
supervised by BEP trainer Rob Taylor.
The Inside Industry day was co-ordinated by the local careers
service, working with the plant and the Welsh Automotive Forum.
They were welcomed to the event by Bridgend plant manager
Kieran Cahill who told them it would give unique insight into the
plant, which is a major contributor to the Welsh economy as well
as an important part of the global Ford business.
At the end of the day they were congratulated by BEP human
resources manager Stuart Townson, who said he hoped it had
been a worthwhile experience and that it would make them think
about careers in the automotive industry.
The practical test assessments included a team-building
challenge and this was won by students from Cynffi g Comprehensive
School, who were presented with their prize by former Ford
lean manufacturing manager, now Welsh Automotive Forum
liaison manager, Paul Bullock.
Daventry on the way to zero landfi ll waste
The Daventry site is adopting more environmentally
friendly waste disposal methods
as part of its strategy to reduce the
amount of waste sent to landfi ll to zero.
Since August this year, the site has sent
its main weekly waste collection to a local
company which has waste-to-energy
facilities, rather than sending it to landfi ll.
This has cut the amount of waste sent to
10 Ford News December 2011/January 2012
landfi ll by approximately 250 tonnes per
year. A similar approach was adopted for
canteen food waste in October, achieving a
further reduction in landfi ll waste.
“We have worked closely with our waste
management partners from Thyssen Krupp
to fi nd greener ways to deal with the waste
from our site,” said Daventry health and
safety engineer Richard Hughes.
There was plenty of expertise on hand to help the youngsters
Plant manager Kieran Cahill welcomes the pupils to Bridgend
Concentration and a steady hand were needed for the tasks
“We are 90 per cent of the way towards
our target of zero waste to landfi ll, and will
be adopting further measures in 2012 which
should help us achieve our objective.”
The current initiatives at Daventry build
on well-established processes to re-use and
recycle the materials used on site, such as
the cardboard and wooden pallets used for
its parts shipments.

Employees presented with programme certifi cates
Ford of Britain employees who completed a
nine-month Government-funded ‘managing
effectiveness’ programme were presented with
their certifi cates by chairman Joe Greenwell.
The university accredited programme,
designed and led by business development
organisation Acua, is directed at growing
leadership skills.
Each delegate was assisted by managers
and supervisors to select business improvement
ideas which are the focus of the
practical, work-based programme, which
included one-to-one coaching, group workshops
and tutorials and online, self-directed
learning.
As a new computer system rolls out at the
Daventry Parts Distribution Centre, members
of the warehouse team have been
playing a key role in providing training.
Twelve employees have been assigned to
the launch team as subject matter experts
(SME) for the system, and are taking the
lead in delivering training to their colleagues
from the warehouse fl oor.
The roll out is part of the global Business
Technology Renewal (BTR) initiative, which
sees existing IT systems replaced by new
supply chain software.
At the end of 2010, Daventry introduced
the software on its ‘inbound’ processes,
and is now launching on its ‘outbound’
processes, such as stock keeping, picking
and shipping.
To ensure there is no disruption to
business, the software is being phased in to
separate picking areas in the warehouse,
with the full site completed in mid-2012. The
fi rst area – the ‘crib’ containing high value
items – went live in October, followed by
two larger areas with higher parts turnover
during November.
“As we roll out the software, it’s critical
that the warehouse team has a good
understanding of the new systems,” explained
Darren Seaton from the BTR launch
team. “Our SMEs have been fully involved
with developing and testing the system, and
are ideally placed to share that knowledge
with their colleagues. The SMEs have
helped to design the training programme,
and are now taking the lead in presenting
the sessions.
“In many cases, it’s the fi rst time they
have done anything like this, so it’s been a
great achievement by the team,” he said.
The training courses are typically based
on one- or two-day sessions, using test
data to illustrate how the system works.
During September and October, more than
160 days of training were delivered.
Dunton’s
rapid
show
The third open day for Dunton’s Rapid Product
Development (RPD) team was the busiest yet, attracting
more than 450 visitors including programme teams,
engineers, designers and cost estimators.
There was a lot of interest in the range of innovative
technologies on display, including reverse engineering,
and its potential use for inspection and manufacturing
processes.
Organiser Nigel Dowsett said: “We were busy all
day, and successfully promoted the facility and diversity
we offer for prototype and low volume manufacturing.
Many visitors were surprised to see what we could
do in-house here in Dunton.
“It will enable RPD to reach a bigger customer base
and provide alternative supply routes with reduced
lead-times and lower costs.
“Everyone was very positive in their feedback. I
would like to thank all RPD personnel for support and
all the visitors for making it a great success. We are
already looking forward to the next one.”
A new leash of life for retiree Rob
Rob Brewer and Deano on a visit
14 Ford News December 2011/January 2012
The team were busy all day showing off innovative technologies
More than 450 visitors were shown round by the RPD team
Rob Brewer has enjoyed having collie
dogs for years, but little did he suspect that
his canine companion Deano would give
him a new lease of life after retirement from
Ford.
In 2009, when Rob left Southampton after
41 years, he knew he wanted to “put
something back into the community”.
A chance mention of a charity called Pets
As Therapy (PAT) on his local radio station
provided the perfect opportunity for Rob to
do both.
In March, Rob became a registered
volunteer for the charity and Deano an
offi cial PAT dog. Now they spend time each
week visiting a local school and a nearby
care home, offering children and older
people an opportunity to stroke a dog.
Deano, a long-haired rough collie, is a
natural for the role, according to Rob, who
worked with the Smart team at the assembly
plant.
Rob said: “Whenever we go out for a
walk, lots of people will stop and say how
good-looking he is – and he knows it. He
gets a lot of attention and thrives on it.”
Through these visits, Pets As Therapy’s
aim is to provide companionship, comfort,
stimulation and even therapy to people
whose circumstances mean they would not
otherwise meet animals.
Deano, so named because of Rob’s
grandson’s obsession with dinosaurs,
seems to love his new role, says Rob.
“I think he looks forward to our visits
because the moment I get his PAT identity
jacket out, he can’t get into the car fast
enough.”
And, if Deano enjoys the attention and the
occasional doggy treat, the visits are
rewarding for Rob, too.
“I like to interact with the people and,
although at the start you walk in as a
stranger, the rapport changes over time and
they’re excited to see us now,” says Rob.
“Some of the people in the care home
used to be pet owners but can’t have pets
now so it’s nice for them to interact with
Deano.
“We’ve had one or two people who are
scared of dogs but they’ve come around
now and they want to stroke him. It can help
allay children’s fears too.”
In the future, Rob is hoping to take Deano
into local hospitals and help therapists in
rehabilitating stroke patients.
For Rob, the personal benefi ts for a
retiree are obvious. “You can’t sit around all
day and having somewhere to take Deano
other than the park is great.”
Andy’s a knock-out
Bridgend PAG line worker Andy
Howells is a knock-out fund-raiser.
The 39-year-old from Port Talbot,
who has worked at the plant for fi ve
years, is currently fund-raising for
MacMillan Cancer Support.
But he really put himself in the fi ring
line with a sponsored boxing match
during a special evening event of 12
bouts at a Swansea nightclub in
November.
Andy will be up against a regular
amateur boxer and while he has never
stepped inside a ring before he is no
stranger to physical combat, having
taken part in many martial arts bouts
over the years.
“I have never boxed before and it
will be different, but a couple of the
guys in plant are amateur boxers and
they have been training and sparring
with me to help me along,” said Andy.
He hit on the idea of the boxing
match as an unusual way to raise
funds when cancer struck a close
family friend and a work colleague’s
family.
Andy has been turning up for work
with black eyes and bruising, but he
shrugs it off.
“I will be giving it a go, but I don’t
know how long I will last,” he added,
before the match.
Even before stepping into the
charity ring, Andy raised more than
£2,600 among his workmates and
hopes to keep topping this up through
his dedicated charity page: http://
most of the £1,500 raised by supervisor Dave Baker for
climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
Despite being taken ill with altitude sickness the day
before the fi nal ascent, Dave managed to reach the
Stella Point crater rim at 5,750 metres. And, despite the
14-hour day, Dave was so exhilarated he managed the
extra climb to the mountain’s highest point, Uhuru
Peak at 5,895 metres – where he is pictured, left.
Dave said: “It was one of the most amazing experiences
of my life. I was thrilled to reach both summits,
as I didn’t want to let down all those people who’d
sponsored me. And the bath I had at the hotel at the
end of the 70km ascent was the best I have ever had.”
His largest sponsor was from suppliers Cobelfret
Ferries, who donated £100. The money has been split
between the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, in remembrance of a
colleague’s son who died from the disease, and The
£100 from Daventry, and HR
departments in different
locations raising £284 and £306.
Dagenham plants, including
Transport Operations, General
combined total of £1,629.
When all the collections have
been added up organisers hope
the £140,000 total for the Essex
be reached.
JDRF cyclists
Some Bridgend Engine Plant
workers proved they are
‘wheelie’ good at fund-raising.
About 20 members of the
plant’s mountain bike club rallied
to raise funds for JDRF (the
Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation). They went out for a
day in south Wales, covering
forests and hills they know well
from rides when they usually
raise money for a local charity.
Club chairman Mal Squibbs
said: “We organised the event at
short notice, but full credit to our
members and their friends who
supported us. The weather was
not good, but we were keen to
fi nish and when we added it up
we had raised £1,435 for JDRF,
so it was worthwhile.”
JANUARY
The Ford Focus was Britain’s best-
FEBRUARY
We told the story of the all-new
regime which had been an integral
part of the new car’s development.
We told how it had endured more
Apprentices feel the heat
Ford’s 2011 intake of Marketing, Sales and
Service graduates went head-to-head in an
‘Apprentice’-style contest, but without the danger
of being fi red by Sir Alan Sugar.
The two teams of seven were tasked with
planning and implementing an event aimed at
capturing customer data and increasing footfall
and sales interest for a Ford dealership group.
Team Evos spent a day at Lakeside Shopping
Centre in Essex, tempting shoppers into Essex
Auto Group’s Ford dealership, while ‘One Team’
went to Ipswich where John Grose is based.
“This competition is aimed at putting our
graduates outside their comfort zone and testing
the skills they have learned. I am looking forward
to seeing how they handle the challenge,” said
Ford marketing director Anthony Ireson.
Team Evos showcased a new Ford Focus and
used a Focus Kinect video game to provide a
chance to win an iPad2.
“The idea was to increase sales for Essex Auto
Group, but not necessarily in a direct way,” said
team member Tom Ginsberg. “It included raising
awareness and data capture.”
The team went online with their iPad2 competition,
using a pay-per-click campaign on Facebook.
“It was all good fun, and it was really nice
for us all to work together,” said Tom
One Team combined a winter safety event with
an unveiling of the new Ford Ranger at the John
Grose dealership in Ipswich, with participation by
the police, AA and Suffolk roadside safety
partnership.
“We were aiming to capture customer data and
get as many people in to the dealership as
possible,” said team member Charles Nolan.
They achieved three orders for the Ranger, sold a
Focus and secured sales leads on both Focus
and Transit, together with six test drives taken
and 50 other leads for the dealership.
“It was a successful day. We managed to get
people in to the dealership and sell cars to them,”
said Charles.
Stan gets his wings - at 82!
Dunton retiree Stan Ramsey has lived out
a boyhood dream by learning to fl y and
making his fi rst solo fl ight – at the age of 82.
“It was wonderful,” he said after the
20-minute fl ight from Earls Colne airfi eld in
Essex. “The landing was good, the circuit
was good, I did everything right.”
Stan, who retired from the purchasing
learning to fl y two years ago.
“Flying means everything to me,” he said.
“It is wonderful to think you can get in your
plane and go for 100 miles in one hour.”
He is now hoping to progress to a full
private pilot’s licence – which will include
examinations in subjects including law,
meteorology and aircraft performance –
UK teams star in global
TMM excellence awards
Two teams from the UK were among four global fi nalists up for the Company’s prestigious technical
TMM awards. The teams from Dagenham and Dunton had been short-listed for 2011 Global
Powertrain Technical Maturity Model Excellence Awards from 75 projects initially submitted from
plants across the world. At the start of November the fi nalists made 12-minute presentations via
video link to the US. The judges in Dearborn chose the US torque converter project as overall
winner, but the fi nalists were commended for their achievements, and high quality presentations
Dagenham team
The Tiger Machining team which has
transformed production output with a mix of
detailed academic analysis and ground-fl oor
engineering highlighted its latest achievements
as part of its presentation.
Two years after Job 1 the team had been
200,000 units down on production targets
before the review of the process using US
academic Tom Weber’s techniques.
Having identifi ed the problems, production
experts from the line worked with Tom
and the engineering team to achieve improvements
like Tiger Head and block
productivity up 35 per cent and 20 per cent
respectively, and overall output increased
from 1850 to 2360 per day.
With other cost and quality improvements,
the model has been taken up by
Bridgend, leading to a 30 per cent cycle
time improvement to date.
The Dagenham team have received
congratulations from director manufacturing,
physical condition of the line and the
performance are superb and I’m confi dent
A Dunton Machining team has
produced an innovative, highlyfl
exible cold test facility which
enables gas and diesel engines
to be tested on the same line
without reducing output.
Working closely with a team in
Ford’s new plant in Chennai,
India, and manufacturers Froehlich,
they have moved away
from the previous engine-specific
cold test machinery. They
developed minimal engine-specifi
c rigging which is changed
during the testing of the previous
engine, reducing potential
production delays and speeding
up the testing process.
Keeping the changes cost
neutral and introducing ergonomic
improvements, the team
that this is only the start. You and your
teams are really adding to the Dagenham
success story and helping us to deliver
quality and cost competitive engines.”
has simplifi ed the testing machinery.
The design has been
future-proofed to allow for
developments in diesel fuel and
gasoline air test systems, and
additional data acquisition cards.
The Dunton team have been
congratulated by director manufacturing
engineering, Powertrain
Europe, Paul Neighbour.
He said: “The development
and implementation of the fi rst
fl exible cold test facility for both
gasoline and diesel engines is a
game-changing manufacturing
system enabler. It allows us to
better meet our common global
goal to be responsive to our
customers’ demands by providing
them with the engines they
want and value.”
Customer loyalty boost
thanks to CRC scheme
Customer loyalty to Ford should be further
strengthened as a result of a new approach
to resolving complex customer issues which
is being piloted by the Daventry-based Ford
Customer Relationship Centre (CRC).
The new approach allows the dealer to
reach a resolution directly with the customer,
rather than needing to consult with the
CRC team.
As a result, any issues can be dealt with
more quickly, and the relationship between
the dealer and the customer is further
enhanced.
The pilot scheme was introduced in
October, and positive feedback means that
the system may be adopted permanently in
2012.
“The whole idea is to make things as easy
as possible for the customer,” explains
Alison James, team leader of the CRC
customer loyalty team.
“They can deal directly with the person in
front of them at the dealership, and get a
quick resolution to their issues.
“It’s vital that the dealer maintains a good
long-term relationship with the customer,
and we believe that this new approach is a
positive way to support that.
rare, but the way those cases are handled is
critical for the reputation of the brand.
UK success at European CLAD awards
UK employees swept the board in one category of the European 2011
Chairman’s Leadership Awards for Diversity (CLAD), and picked up more
than half this year’s gongs.
The CLAD awards celebrate successes in diversity and work-life efforts,
and drew 100 nominations from across Europe. UK entrants took all three
awards in the Building a Respectful and Inclusive Environment category, with
Dunton marketing communications director Maureen Graham, Powertrain
Manufacturing engine assembly supervisor Keith James from Dunton and the
Dagenham Engine Plant EU5 launch team.
Dagenham MP&L shop steward Ishaq Masih won for developing external
partnerships. Ford of Europe experiential manager Rob Macrae and Ellie
Crosby from Ford Credit were picked for Valuing Worklife Flexibility, and
former Ford of Britain marketing director Mark Simpson and production
superintendent Martin McCloskey from Dagenham Stamping and Tooling
Operations for Leading the Way.
Martin McCloskey, Keith James and Ellie Crosby went on to win Global
Diversity and Inclusion Awards, which were presented by Ford of Britain
chairman Joe Greenwell.
Southampton
strengthens
local training
opportunities
The Southampton assembly plant has
strengthened its ties with a local training
centre to create a host of training opportunities
for the community and Ford employees.
Solent Education Business Partnership
(EBP), with which Ford has had links for
many years, has recently opened a new
skills centre on the plant site, offering
courses for both young and adult learners.
The skills centre now occupies half of the
Ford Partnership Centre, with speciallyequipped
training areas for everything from
plastering to motor vehicle maintenance.
The venture is already proving hugely
benefi cial to both partners. Ford staff and
their families now have ready access to a
wide variety of courses. And Solent EBP is
able to draw on Ford’s staff and resources
to boost course content and show students
how learning is applied in the workplace.
Steve Edmonds, foundation learning
manager at the new skills centre. said: “If
the school is wanting to look at a specifi c
part of the curriculum we can get people
from Ford to come over and share their
specifi c expertise so the kids hear it straight
from the horse’s mouth. They are very
proud of what they do at Ford and it’s good
to communicate that.”
Solent EBP offers training for both adults
and teenagers – training which is free to
people living in areas of the city where
access to training is limited.
Its adult education courses cover construction,
motor vehicle maintenance, ICT
and self-defence – all of which are open to
Ford employees. The skills centre is working
Steve Edmonds with 21-year-old Carl Lee, who is taking a car maintenance course
hard to adjust its timetable so that courses
coincide with shift patterns so Ford people
can go straight from work into a training
session. It will work closely with Ford’s own
Employee Development and Assistance
Programme (EDAP).
The other major focus of the skills centre
is accredited courses for young people. The
range of vocational courses is substantial
and programmes for younger learners focus
on boosting their employment prospects by
offering, for example, work experience
One of EBP’s aims is to persuade people
that vocational training can lead to lucrative
careers and is not just a last resort option
for the non-academic.
Another of its key target groups is what
Steve terms the ‘pre-NEETS’ – young
people aged 14 to 19 who are at risk of
being ‘not in education, employment or
training’.
“With the focus on trying to get children
through fi ve GCSEs, a lot of the extra-cur-
Dagenham Stamping and Tooling Operations superintendent
Martin McCloskey and some of his team
ricular activities are being dropped,” says
Steve. “So kids who are just not interested
in subjects like English and maths will just
drop out.
“Schools are desperately trying to fi nd
some training for these kids and in the
courses we offer they’re learning while
they’re getting their hands dirty.
“It’s all about trying to give these kids
some support and some self-discipline and
it comes down to a simple technique: Tell
them when they’ve done it wrong and tell
them when they’ve got it right.”
Assembly plant employee relations offi cer
John Powell, says this partnership is a
positive one for Ford, too. “It’s good to build
on the partnership with Solent EBP, with
which we’ve had a long association,” he
says.
“It gives us the ability to reconnect with
local schools and colleges and the community.
This will also be a positive thing for
Ford staff and their families.”
Jari-Matti Latvala takes off on his way to winning Wales Rally GB in the Fiesta RS
Rallying success
Ford fi nished off the 2011 World
Rally Championship (WRC) in style,
winning Wales Rally GB in a car
powered by a development of the
Bridgend-built EcoBoost engine.
The victory for Ford Abu Dhabi
World Rally Team’s Jari-Matti Latvala
and co-driver Miikka Anttila on the
gruelling fi nal round of the championship
marked the end of a successful
debut season in rallying’s top fl ight for
the new Fiesta RS World Rally Car,
with two further victories for teammate
Mikko Hirvonen in the opening
round in Sweden and also in the heat
and dust of Australia.
Hirvonen also netted second place
fi nishes in Mexico, Sardinia, Argentina
and Spain, plus a third place in
Greece, to fi nish the season as
runner-up.
Latvala fi nished the season in fourth
place, scoring podium spots in Spain,
Australia, Finland, Jordan, Portugal,
Sweden and Mexico.
As a result, Ford Abu Dhabi World
Rally Team fi nished the season as
runner-up in the manufacturers’
standings.
Latvala said: “It’s been a long time
since my last win. Everything came
together during the second half of the
season and I’m so pleased to win in
Wales. It’s the rally where I started my
WRC career in 2002, so it feels like a
home event for me. The team did a
great job all year and this was a
brilliant way to close the season.”

Dagenham decommissioning
Some of the team, from left, Chris Bingle, supervisor Paul White, John Monk, Dave Sharp, Gary Barr, Robin Osman (behind), supervisor
Terry O’Sullivan, Bob Cole, Dave Docherty, Ray Makini, Darren Heaver, Anbarasu ‘Sammy’ Govindsamy and Ian Potter
An initiative decommissioning a redundant
Dagenham manufacturing line has been the
safest and greenest yet, and even managed
to make a small profi t.
Instead of using contractors to carry out
the work and dispose of scrap, 40 employees
from Engine Plant’s central engineering
team have stripped out unwanted machinery
from the 100 by 80-foot redundant
DOHC con rod line this year.
Sales from £100,000 scrap will pay for
re-laying the fl oor in the New Year – to
make way for a new line-side stores area.
The project has been carried out over
nine months without disrupting existing
production schedules.
Praise for Dunton
community plan
A community initiative by a Dunton Powertrain team that included
updating a wildlife garden for schoolchildren has been praised
by its head teacher.
Brenda Dalley from Hadleigh Infant and Nursery School acknowledged
the Ongoing Product Development team for its hard
work repairing sheds and clearing a wildlife area. Thanking them
for completing the wildlife garden project she said it can now be
used regularly, adding: “We have been privileged to have the Ford
team improve our school surroundings.”
Led by supervisor Roland Armitage, the 17 team members also
worked on a seating area, dismantled two sheds and relocated a
third, removed foliage and reroofed and repainted a playhouse
and created a new all-weather area around existing playhouses.
Using in-house skilled employees with
knowledge of the plant environment, project
co-ordinator supervisors Paul White and
Terry O’Sullivan adopted a strategic approach
from the outset, spending the fi rst
few weeks carefully planning the months
ahead.
Paul said: “The closely-packed DOHC
layout made logistical planning essential, as
we had very little space to play with and
machinery weighing up to 20 tonnes to get
out. By clearing space around the heaviest
machinery fi rst we were able to lift heavy
weights safely.”
Terry added: “Our approach, which we
reminded the teams of eight at the start of
each shift, was safety fi rst and environmental
awareness second.”
Central engineering and environmental
manager Tony Weeks said: “The strategic
approach of this project is the reason it has
been our most successful decommissioning
to date. I am particularly proud that our
adherence to the Health and Safety Executive’s
CDM regulations in the planning and
execution of this task has produced an
exemplary safety record.”
Plant manufacturing manager Martin
Everitt said: “This is an outstanding achievement
by the team, and is a testament to the
safety culture, initiative and adaptability of
our highly-skilled workforce.”
The team, from left, Roland Armitage, Andrei Larkby, Naiem Alim,
group manager Jim Wearing, Adrian Betchley, Mike Mason, Matthew
Hopcraft (crouching, in front of group) , Mike Burgess, Graham
Kirby, Bruce MacLennan and Jolie Ramage. Team members
who took part but are not in picture are Martin Alexander, Nigel
Bown, Philip Hines, Harry McDonald, Srikant Ramachandran and
David Thomas
Memorial fi shing challenge
The sun shone – eventually – on the 41
anglers taking part in the inaugural Alan
Gurden Memorial Carp Challenge in
October.
Organiser Tony Connolly was “absolutely
delighted” with the turnout and support for
the event which honoured the dedication of
former Dagenham Tiger Assembly teammate
and fi shing buddy Alan, who died
earlier this year.
More than £1,200 was raised for the
locally-based Dreams Come True Charity
through fi shing fees, sponsorship, a raffl e
and hot/cold refreshments served up by
family members on the day.
Tony said: “After the heavens opened in
the early morning, the sun came out and it
was a fantastic day, with everyone thoroughly
enjoying themselves and 70 carp
caught. I am sure Alan would have loved it.
“It was such a success we could have
sold the places twice over just to colleagues
in the Diesel Centre. We are already planning
next year’s event.”
Guest of honour was Alan’s son Robert,
who beat his personal best catch with a
15lb carp. But he was pipped to the trophy
by Radavan Zierik with his 19lb 10ozs catch
of a common carp late in the day.
The competition was held at Slough
House Fishery, in Bulphan, Essex, with head
bailiff Steve donating £150 of raffl e prizes.
Ford suppliers and fi shing bait and tackle
shops also donated prizes.
Winner Radavan Zierik Second: Robert Gurden Casting off at the start
The event saw 41 anglers take part and raised more than
£1,200 for the Dreams Come True charity
Ford is in Arnold
Thompson’s blood
Arnold Thompson, 89, grew up with Ford in his
blood. His father James joined Ford Motor
Company in 1913 in Trafford Park, Manchester,
in 1913, and rejoined after serving in World
War I.
Arnold moved down south with the family in
1932 when Dagenham was being developed.
He remembers his early days at a school in
Hornchurch: “I was 10 with a Manchester
accent, and I had to learn a different
language!”
He remembers strange London ways, like
live eels and winkles in Romford market. And
he distinctly recalls the time he went into the
new Dagenham plant with his father. “It was
vast, with light coming through every window
it was lit up like Blackpool illuminations.”
After leaving school at 14 Arnold trained as
a plumber, and used this expertise during his
time with the RAF in World War II. After being
demobbed in 1946 he joined Ford and worked
in maintenance in A and B building.
But in the early days of safety awareness,
Arnold became an inspector in 1952, working
his way up to the position of chief safety
inspector by 1962 in the newly-opened
Halewood plant. He retired in 1981, but has
stayed up north. He recalls the changes:
“Those were the early days of safety awareness.
It’s a different world now, which my
father and his generation would not
recognise.”
His son, Colin, however, is carrying on the
family’s interest in health and safety, and is a
European safety specialist.
McCartney, Swansea’s lord mayor Ioan Richard and Ford western district zone manager
Ed Thomas
Swansea win Ford
junior cricket cup
Young people from 20 UK cities fought it
out for a place in the fi nals of the 16 th annual
Ford Inner Cities Cup cricket competition.
Youngsters from eight of those cities –
Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Bradford,
Edinburgh, Leeds, Leicester and Swansea
– eventually competed in the three-day
fi nals which ended in victory for Swansea.
The long-running Ford Inner Cities Cup
continues to provide youngsters from urban
areas with the opportunity to play cricket
and enjoy the physical and social benefi ts
the sport uniquely provides.
While its focus is on developing grassroots
youth cricket, the Ford Inner Cities
Cup has also helped cultivate fi rst-class
talent: England and Essex star, Ravi Bopa-
ra, for instance, credits the competition as
providing his fi rst taste of competitive
cricket.
Matthew Patten, chief executive of The
Lord’s Taverners cricketing charity, commented:
“The Lord’s Taverners is all about
giving disadvantaged young people a
sporting chance. The Ford Inner Cities Cup
provides the opportunity for young people
from urban areas, where access to sport is
often restricted, to take part in a national
event and enjoy the benefi ts of competitive
sport.”
Ford’s support for cricket also includes
sponsorship of the Essex County Cricket
Ground in Chelmsford, which has been
called The Ford County Ground since 2005.
Dunton hosts IT learning and test drives
Dunton hosted GLITS UK, a Global IT
Learning Summit, where more than 150
Ford IT staff had the opportunity to attend a
wide range of seminars covering topics
such as ‘IT tools and methods’ and ‘Productivity
in the workplace’.
With up to six seminars hosted by both
Ford IT colleagues and external presenters
running at a time, there was plenty of choice
for the attendees, but it was not all work
though, with fun challenges also on hand
such as digital Scalextric and an F1
simulator.
The F1 challenge was closely fought
between Phil Adcock and Aaron Braich,
with Aaron the eventual winner, walking
away with a McLaren team T-shirt signed by
star drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson
Button.
For many, the highlight of the day was the
two vehicles on display – a Ford EVOS
concept and Fiesta ST concept.
Dunton was also host to a Feel the
Difference employee drive event, where
Dunton and Warley employees could test
drive the latest Focus, C-MAX, Mondeo,
Kuga, Ranger, Galaxy, Transit, Transit
Connect BEV, Ka and Fiesta.
As well as the driving, for which more
than 900 employees registered, there were
displays in four areas – green, quality, smart
and safe – with engineers on hand to
answer questions and display vehicles
including Fusion Hybrid, Escape Hybrid and
Kuga Individual.
And Ford of Europe also took to the road
to demonstrate the future of automotive
safety which Ford is pioneering in affordable
vehicles today.

CONGRATULATIONS to
Frank Wiltshire who celebrated
his 90th birthday on
26 November. Frank
worked as a foreman in the
small parts paint shop at
Ford Dagenham from 1947.
Born in east London, he
started work at the old
Briggs plant straight from
his ‘demob’ from the Army,
in which as a Corporal he
took part in the Normandy
landings on Gold beach.
After his retirement in 1974
he moved to Cirencester
and then to Tewksbury
where his family held a surprise
90th birthday party on
26 November which was
attended by about 100
close friends and family,
some of whom had travelled
from as far away as
China. Happy birthday
Frank - let’s hear from you
on your 100th.
Memory lane
The archives have been under investigation to reveal
Ford’s long-standing relationship with Britain’s police
forces.
For several decades Ford vehicles have been a
favourite of the UK’s emergency services. ‘Bobbies’
could regularly be seen patrolling local villages in skyblue
Anglias, with iconic white doors. The Anglia 105E
was notably famous for its overhead valve engine and
long gearing, which anticipated the opening of
Britain’s major motorways, the M1 and M6, in the
early 1960s. Today, Ford vehicles still play a leading
role in Britain’s emergency services.
