PURIFIED PHOSPHORIC ACID (PPA) TECHNOLOGY AND ELECT-GRADE PHOSPHORIC ACID (EPA) TECHNOLOGY (INTRODUCTION OF THE WET PROCESS TECHNOLOGY) CONDUCT THE OPERATIONPH-O-20 Honglin Li Manager of Wengfu PPA Plant Wengfu Group Co., Ltd., Guiyang City, CHINA As the basic material of phosphate products, Industrial and Food Grade Phosphoric Acid are usually produced from yellow phosphorus. Considering the high energy consumption, high cost of production and serious pollution; there is the need to substitute production of phosphoric acid from yellow phosphorus with the purification technology of wet process phosphoric acid in the future. However, the impurities contained in the wet process phosphoric acid make it not feasible for direct use in the production of phosphate products. Hence the need for the proper purifying method to get rid of these impurities is essential and beneficial. After a considerable period of deep research, a brand new liquid extraction technology has been developed by Wengfu (Group) Co., Ltd. This technology has the advantages of high extraction performance, concise equipment, low investment, and easy controllability. In addition, a new technology of producing Electronic Grade Phosphoric Acid by crystallization has been developed and put into production. The technology uses the purified industrial and food grade phosphoric acid produced from Wengfu’s wet process as raw materials and reduces the impurity content further. THE HISTORY, OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF THE J. R. SIMPLOT COMPANY PHOSPHATE ORE SLURRY PIPELINE SYSTEMS PH-O-21 James A. Samuelson, Director of Engineering, J.R. Simplot Company AgriBusiness Group The J.R. Simplot Company operates two separate Phosphate Ore Slurry Pipeline Systems. The first transports 1.8MM tons/year of P2O5 from the Smoky Canyon mine 87 miles to the Don Plant processing facility near Pocatello, Idaho. The second pipeline system transports Phosphate Ore Slurry 93 miles from the Vernal, Utah Mine to the processing facility near Rock Springs, Wyoming. This pipeline currently transports about 1.5MM tons/year of P2O5 but is designed to carry 2.8MM tons/year of P2O5. Positive displacement pumps are used in both pipeline systems to provide the necessary head to overcome friction loss and move the Phosphate Ore Slurry over mountain ranges encountered between the mine and the processing facilities. The paper will provide a brief overview of the design parameters for both pipeline systems as well as a history of significant events related to the operation and maintenance of these pipelines from their installation in the mid 1980’s to present day. 67
