CATHY'S NORTHERN NEWS BLACKPOOL 2116/2003 JUDCE: Zola Rawson The only northern wins were Jean and Robin's "(ientom Lorcan at Talgaver" wirrrring the G.D. ancl my own "Rat,ensbridge Oscars Br.1r" w;nnln* rn" Veteran Dog class. Everyone went back to Robin and Jean Spencer's for a BBQ. I did hear that a good time was had by all. A ceftain two ladies t do believe fell asleep in the conservatory and were doing better than any "fly catchers". (Wish I had been there with my canrera). LEEDS 2717/2003 JUDGE Miss J Lannine. We allthought we were going to be.judged by Jtrne Minns only to flnd when we got there it was Jean Lanning. The secretary said it had been advertised in both dog papers but I could find nothing about a change ofjudge. Even on reading the critiques the judge (30/08/03) didn't even know what had happened, excepted that we do have June Minns next year. (2004). BOLTON TOWN SHOW JUDGE: Mrs L. Smith-Fenton. This is my focal show, I think it is brilliant. My young tnan Ruvcnsl'tridgc pure Mugic u'on iunior dog + BOB beating his mother Mugic Tintes ot Ruven,shrirlgc who won P.Grad, Dad Rossh,n Kerne ql Ravenshridge was too exhausted after the Wales trip the day before (typical man)... SCOTTISH KENNEL CLUB JUDGE: Mrs M. McBride I had a very enjoyable SKC this year travelling up on the Saturday and staying with Nell over night. A few G & T's, a very enjoyable rneal with some very good cornpany. good wine, who can beat that; thank you Nell. The only Northern win was Ravensbridge Pure Maeic who won his puppy class even though he was a hoof igan in the ring. But rnany congratulatiot'rsto Ch Flaunden Flora McDonald who won Limit Bitch and then took the BCC, BoB and c4. well done! we allenjoyed the glass of champagne and snacks provided by Jean aftel the show. This brought back fond memories of when I first started showing in the early 80's and the SKC picnic. lt is a pity they fellaway. could we not revive thenr? lt is always good for us all to get together, I don't think we do it often enough, I know that I have made some good friends over the years but with the hustle and bustle of life we ruslr to shows and then rush away whereas a picnic or gathering would be tlre excuse needed to stay for a while and say hello. My grandson and future vet started at Liverpool tJniversity two weeks age. He had had Karen and myself running round like headless chickens, buying this arrcl that. Clothes. hair accoutrernents (i.e. straighteners, brushes, gel), plus stul'l'to lllishtcrr lris loont at the residence. But the day catne when he was finally leaving lhc rrcst arrcl we packed both cars and I had the proud position of Cran being driven clorvn to l.ivcrpool by her beloved Grandson. We eventually got hirn settled in and had a rvarrtlcr lorrrrcl. Student bars, all doubles f,2, snooker roorlls, TV roonrs. music roonrs cvcr'\ rvhirrr sccnred to be catered for. We were leaving our boy in these strange surnrundirrgs irrrtl orrc look at 100 I rrl loltl rne she was feeling exactly the satrre as rne. We both burst into tears and *rl rrt. le.lt lris strong anns around us and knew he understood the soppy wolnen ill his r.b llrrl thilt was a fortnight ago and now we know he's flne. He actually came hotne s, r.'(' il\ lirr two hours last Saturday, dumping washing and picking up fresh stuff, ,rrr1hlfi us with tales of Fresher Fairs, dinners with tutors and obviously having a e lrrrlt' rrl l tirne. t " t \tohcr 2003. I had been invited to judge the final of the Wolflround Lure I fiff \f ng, at Eccleshall, near Stafford. Just a t/ohour drive frorn us so a leisurely lunrlir\ outittg. We took Tip and Bruce with us as I decided a rowdy hooligan puppy rrr lrcilcl with me. Creating havoc in the house, phones, remote controls, newspapers rtr ru( bccoming his favourite toys and as for Tip, well she just loves to chase anyrhrng irntl especially to kill lures and not to tnention the fact that she could outdo a tlolllrortnd easily!. After a fiosty start it turned out to be an excellent day and we got ,lrrrrr lhcre to a small excited crowd. I rrrrrrl say the Wolfhound people are really nice and welcoming. We have found this ,rl r.rcr'! occasion that we have met them and today was to prove no exception. After trro vct'y warnt cups of coffee and having given Tip a chance to show what she was rrr,rtlc ol-with the lure the main event began; yours truly in the centre with her red and ,rlrrtc paddles. We had Wolfles chasing the lure and Wolfies not even wanting to be lrotlrcrcd even looking at the lure but it was still a very jolly event with everyone lr,rr irrg a good laugh together. Just before the final, we had another break with soup' r,rrr.lrrliches and cakes washed down by lashings of good fi'esh coff-ee (kettles that plug rrrlo ciqarette lighters - I'rn ofTto Argos tomorrow). Also a raffle at which FJK even ,,,,rr ir plize a bottle of wine and I got one for judging. After the flnal, we had the prize yrr irrg. A lovely dog collar with the nantes of every dog fiont, I think 1982, engraved ,,rr rrrtlividual shields around the neck plus a lovely, again engraved, cup goingto the s nurcr', a shield yet again engraved with names to the runner Lrp, a trophy for best n,rricc ancl vetelan winner. The winner was also presented with a print of coursing \\ trlllrounds, I think by Gill Griffin. An invitatiott was also sent out by everyone to all l)eer'ltourrd people; conre arrd pafticipate. I will be keeping you all posted on dates' rrrrrt's irrrd places. We let a very agitated Tip have another few goes after everything rr,rr lrnished a task which she really loved. Even with the lure going at full wack she lr |lr 11p with this strange object with orange .rrr,l rrhitc tails and on nlol'e than one occar'r11 l1i11l it in her nrouth. She really did look r'1't'sh o1vi11o at tull tilt. At tlre end of the day ' rcr\()nc.ir-rst let all the dogs off to chase the l,rrt' iuttl that was a sight to behold about l5 \\ ullics and Tip chasing the lure and not one ,r,ryrr rvord between thern but then rry gir'l rr,r'. rr lll0 lead. Midland Matters Jean & Tom Rhodes Sunrnrer is waning now & what a summer, record temperatures & long periods of drought aggravating tlre usual problern ofhow to keep our hounds cool. Some shows resernbled Bedouirr encampments with weird & wonderful materials used to provide shade and the use of plastic bottles half filled with water, and fiozerr the night before the slrow to provide cold water during the day. what a boorr air-conditioned cars are, a few years ago, considered a luxury. now alnrost an essential. we are now coming to our favourite tirne of year. Autunrrr. out with tlre hounds in the coolof tlre evenirrg, watchingtlre bats wheel and dive & dragging Deerhounds away from the blackberry bushes their lips & teeth stained with juice. we noticed a funny thing though, it only seerns to be our bitclres that do this, a trick learnt from tlreir dams, do other hounds "blackberry"? G. Jeannie decided to take this fruit gathering a stage furlher by starrding on her lrind legs to pull the danrsons of ourtree, she soon decided that "these blackberries" were not to her taste! we've not been able to get to nrany shows what with one thirrg and anotlrer, puppies and the daughter's wedding preparations rnostly, not lorrg now though. we did rnanage to get to the Hourrdshow, anotlrer typical sunlnrer's day for 2003! Hardly a cloud with just a slight refreshing breeze to take the heat away, Mr James (Jay) Phinizy judged has kindly giverr us perrnissiorr to print his critique in the newsletter. we had our usual get togetlrer after the show but several exhibitors had to decline our invitation due to their justified colrcent for the houncls in the heat. Several did however did attend our barbeque and we managetl to provicle suitable accommodatiorr for their dogs, a most en-joyable encl to tlrc clay. A similar post show barbeque was also enjoyed rnore reccnlly at ( ilcnis & Mick's following Matlock open Show where they won l]oll rr itlr lrrta & Nic & Glen Bailey got BPIS with their Greyflax Guinever.e.
